Mary, Queen conceived without original sin

Among the invocation of the Lauretana Lethanias, the Church greets the Virgin as "Queen conceived without original sin" (in Latin, Regina sine labe original concept). It is one of the pleas that were added to Latvia in relation to the definition of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, proclaimed by Pope Pius IX on December 8, 1854 in the bull Ineffabilis God. With this invocation we do not sing a capricious privilege, but the most delicate work of grace: Mary was preserved from original sin from the first moment of her conception, by pure mercy of God and in anticipation of the merits of Christ, her Son and Redeemer.

It should be said from the beginning clearly and with love: calling Mary queen is not to worship her. Adoration belongs only to God. Mary is queen for her Son and for her Son; her royalty is service, it is to be completely turned to Jesus. And her Immaculate Conception does not mean the virginal conception of Jesus - frequent confusion that this novena will want to undo - but she herself, the Mother, was kept free from all sin from her first beat. For nine days we will approach this mystery to ask for a cleaner heart by its intercession.

Essential data of the advocation

  • Invocation: "Queen conceived without original sin" (Regina sine labe original concept), from the Lauretana Lethanias of the Blessed Virgin.
  • Origin: He joined Latvia in relation to the definition of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, proclaimed by Pope Pius IX on December 8, 1854 in the bull Ineffabilis God.
  • Feeling: means that Mary was preserved from the original sin from the first moment of her conception, by grace and in anticipation of the merits of Christ. No refers to the virginal conception of Jesus or to Mary being born without the union of her parents.
  • Evangelical foundation: The angel's greeting, "Rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with you" (Luke 1: 28), and the enmity announced in Genesis 3: 15.
  • For whom: for anyone who wants to purify his heart, grow in filial trust towards Mary and better understand what the Church celebrates on December 8.

How to prepare to pray the novena

Choose a serene place and a fixed hour during these nine days. It can help you with an image of the Immaculate, a lit candle or simply the silence of your room. The novena does not seek the haste or the amount of words, but the constancy of the heart: to go every day, even briefly, with the simplicity of the one who visits his mother. If one day you can't, take it back to the next without trouble.

Before you pray, keep your mind to yourself. He acknowledges with humility that you also need to be cleansed; this novena is not to contemplate from afar a grace of others, but to ask that the same mercy that preserved Mary transform your life. The Immaculate Virgin is not so far from us: she is the first of what God wants to do with all baptized, which already fully achieved what is offered to us every day.

Have your Bible at hand to read the proposed verses directly. He calmly prays the Father, the Avemaría, the Glory and the Hail, without reciting them as a path. And always remember who you are addressing and through whom: we worship God, and we implore the intercession of Mary, who never keeps anything for himself, but all refers it to her Son.

Proposed order for each day

  1. Sign of the cross.
  2. Initial prayer (the same every day).
  3. Invocation to the Holy Spirit.
  4. Historical memory of the day.
  5. Meditation of the day.
  6. Suggested word of God (read it calmly).
  7. Specific purpose for the day.
  8. Prayer of the day.
  9. Father, Avemaría, Gloria and Hail.

Opening prayer for every day

God and our Father, who prepared a worthy dwelling for your Son by preserving Mary from all sin from the first moment of her conception, look with goodness to those we come to you today. We worship only you, the source of all holiness, and we ask you, through the intercession of the Immaculate One, to purify our heart and to pray it entirely to Christ. Let us pray this novena with simple faith and with sincere desire for conversion. By Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Invocation to the Holy Spirit

Come, Holy Spirit, you filled Mary with grace and made her all pure for the Lord. Come also upon us: illuminate our mind to understand this mystery without confusing it, and light our will to desire the cleansing of the heart. Teach us to honor the Mother without subtracting anything from the worship due to God alone, and condemn us, with her and like her, to say "yes" to your will. Amen.

Day One - What is the Immaculate Conception (and what is not)

Historical report

For centuries, the Christian people intuited and celebrated that the Mother of the Redeemer had been preserved from sin, long before the truth was solemnly defined. The feast of the Conception of Mary was spread in the East and the West, and theologians and saints deepened in their sense. The Church carefully distinguishes two different mysteries that popular language sometimes mixed: the conception of Mary without sin and the virginal conception of Jesus. That long and prudent maturation prepared the dogmatic definition of 1854, which did not invent a novelty, but expressed with authority what faith already professed.

Meditation

The Immaculate Conception means that Mary, from the first moment of her conception, was preserved free from the stain of original sin, by God's grace and in anticipation of the merits of Christ. It is not that she saved herself, nor was she on the margin of redemption: on the contrary, she was redeemed in the most perfect way, preserved from falling before even being able to do so. A frequent confusion must be overcome: the Immaculate Conception does not speak of the virginal conception of Jesus within Mary, but of Mary's own conception. Starting by understanding well what we celebrate is the first act of love for this mystery.

Suggested word of God

"He chose us in him before the creation of the world, that we might be holy and unforgiving before him for love" (Ephesians 4: 4).

Purpose

Today I will simply explain to myself or to another person what is and what is not the Immaculate Conception, to love this mystery with truth.

Prayer of the day

Lord, God of all holiness, I thank you because in Mary you showed what grace can do. Help me to understand this mystery well and not to confuse it, to worship you as the only Holy and to honor your Mother as the first of the redeemed. Amen.

Second Day - "Full of grace"

Historical report

The Christian tradition has seen in the greeting of the angel Gabriel one of the biblical roots of faith in the Immaculate. The term with which the messenger addresses Mary expresses a fullness of unique grace, a being inhabited by God's favor in a unique way. The Fathers and theologians meditated on these words long, and the 1854 definition collected them as part of the foundation of dogma. It is not a matter of forced reading, but of listening slowly to what the Gospel already says about the young woman of Nazareth.

Meditation

When the angel greets Mary, he does not name her by her name, but calls her "full of grace," as if that were her true name before God. Being full of grace means that there was no room for sin in it; his heart was entirely available to the Lord. And here it shines again that his greatness is all of God: Mary is filled with grace because "the Lord is with you." He does not glorify himself; he is troubled, asked, and finally offered. His fullness is not pride, but full openness to Him who fills it.

Suggested word of God

"Rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with you" (Luke 1: 28).

Purpose

Today I will ask, at a specific moment, that God fill with His grace the corner of my life where I find it most difficult to let him in.

Prayer of the day

Father, who you greeted Mary as full of grace, also enlarges my heart in your favor. Don't let sin take the place you want to dwell in. By the intercession of the Immaculate, make me more available to your will. Amen.

Third day - The dogma of 1854 (Pius IX, Ineffabilis Deus)

Historical report

On December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX solemnly proclaimed in the bull Ineffabilis God, the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. With this act, the Church declared as the truth of revealed faith what the Christian people had been believing and celebrating since ancient times: that Mary was preserved from all original sin from the first moment of her conception, by grace and in anticipation of the merits of Christ, the Savior of the human race. The definition was not a whim, but the authorized seal on a long-matured faith.

Meditation

A dogma does not embody the mystery or replace it with a cold formula; it protects it and offers it clearly so that we can love it without deception. The one of 1854 reminds us that the initiative is always from God: Mary did not conquer its purity, she received it. And he received it thanks to Christ, whose redemption was applied to it in advance. Therefore the Immaculate One, far from moving away from the Saviour, leads us to him: all that she is is is for her Son. To thank dogma is to thank the mercy that is advanced.

Suggested word of God

"The Lord created me, first of his ways, before his oldest works" (Proverbs 8,22).

Purpose

Today I will read or remember with gratitude that the Church defined this dogma in 1854, and I will thank God for guiding his Church in truth.

Prayer of the day

Lord, who enlightens your Church to guard the faith, I thank you for the gift of the Immaculate Conception, proclaimed by Pius IX. May I never separate the Mother from her Son, but in her I always recognize you, the author of all grace. Amen.

Fourth day - Enmity with evil

Historical report

From the first centuries, tradition read the so-called "protogospel" of Genesis as a first promise of salvation. In God's words to the serpent, after the fall, the Church has seen a veiled announcement of the Mother of the Redeemer and her offspring. The Christian reflection on this verse has for centuries accompanied the ripening of faith in the Immaculate, for who is in total enmity with evil cannot be left under his dominion for a moment.

Meditation

God announces an irreconcilable enmity between the serpent and the woman, between her offspring and her. In Mary that enmity is total: in her sin never had any place, not even a moment. The one who was to be Mother of the Saviour could not share soil with the enemy. This mystery is not the deafness; it shows it fully on the side of God, as a sign of the victory that Christ would achieve on the cross. Looking at her, we learn that we too are called to enmity with evil, not to agree with sin.

Suggested word of God

"I will put enmity between you and the woman, between your offspring and his" (Genesis 3: 15).

Purpose

Today I will sincerely name a habit or commitment to the evil I often tolerate, and I will declare to you, with God's help, a clear enmity.

Prayer of the day

God almighty, who put enmity between woman and enemy, give me the courage to break with sin. By the intercession of the Immaculate, your ally against evil, keep me firm on the side of your grace. Amen.

Fifth Day - Lourdes, 1858: "I am the Immaculate Conception"

Historical report

A few years after the definition of dogma, in 1858, in Lourdes, France, there were Marian apparitions recognized by the Church. According to the account of the seer, the Lady who was shown to her was identified with these words: "I am the Immaculate Conception." The young woman, simple and without theological instruction, transmitted an expression that she could not have invented and which coincided with the recent dogmatic definition. The Church, with her usual prudence, examined the facts and recognized them; Lourdes became a great place of prayer and comfort.

Meditation

May the Lady herself be named "the Immaculate Conception" moved by her delicacy: Heaven simply confirmed what the Church had defined. And yet everything in Lourdes refers beyond Mary. She does not ask for worship for herself, but penance, prayer and conversion; she invites to drink from the water, to pray for sinners, to return to her Son. This is always the Immaculate One: it never remains with the believer's gaze, but leads it to Christ. To honor her is to let us take her to Jesus.

Suggested word of God

"Do as he tells you" (John 2.5).

Purpose

Today I will make a small gesture of conversion - a prayer, a reconciliation, a penance - welcoming the invitation that the Virgin repeats in Lourdes.

Prayer of the day

Immaculate Conception, which in Lourdes you invited to penance and prayer, always condemn me to your Son. May it never stop me in you, but for you it will come to Christ, the only Savior. To him be worship, and to you my filial trust. Amen.

Sixth day - Mary, first of redemption

Historical report

The tradition of the Church has seen Mary as the first of the redeemed, the one who received fully and in advance what is offered to us all in Christ. The Fathers called it "the new Eve," and the liturgy celebrates it as the aurora before the Sun, as the morning that announces the full day of salvation. The reflection on his Immaculate Conception was always based on this conviction: in it is advanced the victory that Christ obtains for the whole Church.

Meditation

Mary is the first, the first ripe fruit of Christ's redemption. In it we see already realized what God wants for all: an entirely reconciled human being, without the shadow of sin, transparent to grace. That is why the Immaculate One is not a privilege to isolate her, but a promise that includes us: in it we are shown where we walk. To contemplate it is to contemplate our hope fulfilled in a creature like us, saved by the same Redeemer who also saves us.

Suggested word of God

"The Mighty has done great works in me: his name is holy" (Luke 1: 49).

Purpose

Today I will look at my own life as a way to that fullness, taking a concrete step of Christian hope in something that weighs me.

Prayer of the day

Lord, who made Mary the first of your redemption, encourages my hope. That when you look at her, you don't feel her far away, but as a preview of what you want to do to me. By his intercession, bring me to the fullness of your grace. Amen.

Day 7 - The baptismal grace that also cleans us

Historical report

Since ancient times, the Church has linked the Immaculate Conception to the baptism of the faithful. The Fathers taught that in baptism the believer is washed from original sin and clothed with grace; and they saw in Mary, preserved from her conception, the insurmountable model of that new life. The baptismal liturgy and Marian piety illuminate each other: what in it was preservation from the first moment, in us is purification by water and the Spirit.

Meditation

There is a deep closeness between the Immaculate and each baptized. Mary was preserved from original sin; we were cleansed from him in baptism. The difference is real, but the source is the same: the redemption of Christ. That is why we can look at the Virgin without feeling her alien, as the Mother who precedes us on the path of grace. And so his purity interpels us: he asks that we not waste the gift received, that we live according to the cleansing that was given to us, renewing the promises of our baptism every day.

Suggested word of God

"I will sprinkle you with pure water and you will be purified" (Ezekiel 36,25).

Purpose

Today I will renew my promises of baptism internally, renouncing evil and giving thanks for the grace that cleansed me.

Prayer of the day

Holy Father, who purified me in the waters of baptism, give me to live as your son, according to the cleansing you gave me. May the Immaculate, preserved by your grace, teach me to guard mine. Amen.

Day 8 - Queen for His Son and for His Son

Historical report

The faith of the Church has honored Mary as Queen, and so the Lauretana Lethanias invoke her with numerous titles. Tradition has always understood that this royalty is entirely different from that of the kings of the earth: Mary reigns because she is the Mother of the King, Christ, and because she participates by grace of her victory. The same invocation "Queen conceived without original sin" unites his royalty to his Immaculate Conception: he is queen because it is entirely of God.

Meditation

To call Mary queen is not to reduce the worship due to God alone; it is to recognize that she participates in the royalty of her Son in the most humble and fullest way. His crown is not of dominion, but of service: he that obeys best reigns, and forgets most of himself. All his greatness is turned to Christ. Therefore he never keeps anything for himself: as we ask him, he refers it to his Son; as he receives it, he returns it in glory to God. His royalty is a transparent mirror that only reflects the light of the true King.

Suggested word of God

"Here is the slave of the Lord; let it be done in me according to your word" (Luke 1: 38).

Purpose

Today I will exercise my own Christian dignity as a service: I will make a concrete gesture of giving to someone, imitating the Queen who serves.

Prayer of the day

To you alone, Lord, worship and glory. And to you, Mary, Queen conceived without sin, my trust as a son. Teach me that to reign is to serve, and always give me your Son, the only King of my life. Amen.

9th Day - Walk towards purity of heart

Historical report

The devotion to the Immaculate has inspired countless ways of conversion and holiness throughout the centuries. Many saints made this mystery the heart of their spiritual life, and entire communities were put under their patronage to learn from it inner cleansing. The Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on 8 December, and on that day renews the desire for the purity of the Mother to be inferred to her children.

Meditation

By closing this novena, the Immaculate leaves us a task: to walk towards purity of heart. It is not an unattainable ideal or a sad rigorism, but rather to let God order our affections, our intentions and our looks to good. The pure of heart is the one who sees God, for he is not tarnished by deception or selfishness. Mary, preserved from all sin, precedes us and accompanies us in that way. Let us ask that your example and intercession reach us a clean, simple and true heart, all oriented towards your Son.

Suggested word of God

"Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God" (Matthew 5: 8).

Purpose

Today I will make a stable decision - to approach confession, to take care of my look, to keep an hour of prayer - that will sustain in time my desire for purity of heart.

Prayer of the day

Lord, at the end of this novena I thank you for the gift of your Mother's Immaculate Conception. Give me, by his intercession, a clean heart that seeks you in everything and sees you in all. To you, only God, worship; to Mary, Queen conceived without sin, my love and my trust. By Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Novena prepared by the rezaelrosario.org team as original devotional material. The historical data are offered in accordance with the tradition and the Magisterium of the Church; devotion is addressed to God, and Mary is asked to intercession.
