Memory of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ linked to Australia's first Catholic mission among Aboriginals, founded by the Passionists (Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ) on Stradbroke Island in 1843, among the Quandamooka people.
Documented history and memory received
On May 18, 1843, four Passionist priests - three Italian and one Swiss - were landed on Stradbroke North Island, authorized by Governor George Gipps to use an old prison building in Dunwich, on the lands of the Quandamooka people. It was the first Catholic mission to Aboriginal Australians. The Passionists, whose charism is to preach and keep alive the memory of the Passion of Christ, carried their cross and their devotion to Jesus crucified to a world that was completely alien to them. The mission was considered a failure - they withdrew around 1847 - but 175 years later the Quandamooka people continue to remember and celebrate that first sowing of faith and the arrival of the Passionists. The devotional bond is the Passion of Christ, the seal of the founding congregation.
Who venerates the memory
This devotion addresses the look on Jesus Christ: to his Incarnation, his Passion, his Eucharistic presence, or the historical footprint of faith, as the case may be. The place, community or monument does not replace Christ or act by their own power. They help to remember the Gospel and live it through prayer, sacraments, conversion and charity.
History, tradition and discernment
Historical memory of a passionist mission among native peoples. It is avoided to present its result from a triumphalist look or to erase the quandamooka perspective. The fact sheet retains the memory received, but does not present as historical evidence what the source itself transmits as tradition, account of origin, favor attributed or believing interpretation.
Celebration and devotional life
Festivity or main time: May 18 (anniversary of the foundation, 1843).
No promises are kept: devotion is the grateful memory of the Passion of Christ preached by the first missionaries and preserved by the indigenous community.
