Commemoration of the first Holy Sacrifice of the Mass held publicly in Australia on May 15, 1803 by the convicted Irish priest James Dixon, the founding milestone of the Eucharist and of the Church on the continent.

Documented history and memory received

James Dixon, born in Wexford County, Ireland, in 1758 and formed at the Salamanca and Lovaina seminars, was deported for life to New South Wales following the Irish rebellion of 1798, despite doubts about his guilt. Governor Philip Gidley King, by proclamation of April 19, 1803 and with permission from London, granted him conditional emancipation to exercise the ministry. On Sunday, May 15, 1803 Dixon celebrated the first public Catholic Mass in Australia: the Sydney Gazette of May 22 recorded that 'the Roman Catholic congregation met for the first time in Sydney'. The exact place and material details (improvised ornaments, chalice) are not documented with certainty and belong to tradition. In 1804 Pius VII granted Dixon powers and appointed him apostolic prefect. The Australian Catholic community honors this first Eucharistic celebration every year as the root of its faith.

Who venerates the memory

This devotion addresses the look on Jesus Christ: to his Incarnation, his Passion, his Eucharistic presence, or the historical footprint of faith, as the case may be. The place, community or monument does not replace Christ or act by their own power. They help to remember the Gospel and live it through prayer, sacraments, conversion and charity.
