The hills of Dassa-Zoumé

Dassa-Zoumé is a small town in central Benin, known for its granite hills that rise abruptly from the plain. Among these rocks, 19th-century missionaries discovered a place of wild beauty that reminded them of the grotto of Massabielle in Lourdes. In 1954, the Bishop of Dassa consecrated the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Arigbo within the rocks, installing a statue of the Virgin Mary in a natural granite grotto.

«Arigbo»: the Yoruba invocation

Arigbo meaning in Yoruba language (the main language of southern Benin) "the one who has had mercy". The name was not imposed by the missionaries but spontaneously adopted by the local population, who found in that advocation a deep resonance with their own spirituality. In the Yoruba cosmovence, mercy is a divine attribute of the first magnitude: the Virgin of Arigbo is, for the faithful of Dassa, the merciful Mother who listens and protects.

The "Lourdes of Benin"

The Dassa-Zoumé sanctuary is known throughout West Africa as the "Lourdes of Benin." Every August, thousands of pilgrims arrive from Benin, Togo, Nigeria, and Ghana. The pilgrimage includes prayers at the rocks, nighttime torchlight processions, and a ritual bath in the spring that flows from the rocks.

Inculturation in the cradle of voodoo

Benin is known as the "cradle of the voodoo," the traditional African religion that spread throughout the world with the slave trade. The shrine of Dassa- Zoumé is a notable example of inculturation: Marian devotion has been integrated into a very complex spiritual landscape, without renouncing its Christian identity. The faithful of Dassa pray to the Virgin of Arigbo knowing that her neighbors veneration the spirits of the rocks, and live together in peace.
