History of the Catholic Mission in the Gambia

The Gambia is the smallest country in continental Africa, a strip of land that follows the course of the Gambia River and is completely surrounded by Senegal, except for its Atlantic façade. With a population of about 2.5 million, of which more than 95 per cent are Muslims, the Gambian Catholic community is small but significant.

The Espirian missionaries established the first mission in Banjul (then Bathurst) in the 19th century. The cathedral was built in the centre of the capital, near the central market and the port, in a location that reflects the will of the missionaries to be present in the heart of urban life.

Architecture and meaning

The cathedral is a building with simple lines, consistent with the humility of the community that supports it. It does not possess the grandiosity of European cathedrals or the monumental nature of the Yamoussoukro Basilica, but its meaning is enormous: it is the home of a religious minority that has maintained its faith for generations in a context of tolerance but also of vulnerability.

The interior houses an altarpiece dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, images of African saints and a baptismal pile that has seen generations of Gambian Catholics pass by.

Gambian ecumenism

The Gambia is a country where the coexistence between Muslims and Christians is generally peaceful. President Yahya Jammeh (1994- 2017) declared the Gambia "Islamic Republic" in 2015, which generated tensions, but the Catholic community maintained its presence and dialogue with the Muslim authorities.

The Banjul Cathedral is a space where the Catholic minority meets not only for prayer but to strengthen its identity in a country where being a Christian is an exception. Marian parties - especially the Assumption (August 15) and the Immaculate Conception (December 8) - are moments of visibility and joy for the community.
