The Cathedral of Santa Maria de Libreville
Libreville · Gabón · Catedral metropolitana
The Cathedral of Santa Maria, the seat of the archdiocese of Libreville, is the most important Catholic temple in Gabon. Located in the centre of the Gabonese capital, the cathedral has been the center of the country's Catholic life since the 19th century spiritist evangelization.
Gabon: the "land of the spirithans"
Gabon has been called the "land of the espionans" by the long and fruitful presence of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit in the country. The spiritist missionaries arrived in Gabon in 1844, when the territory was a French colony, and established the first Catholic missions on the coast and inside the country.
The spiriians worked mainly among the peoples fang, myènè, punu and kota, adapting their evangelizing method to local cultures. The Virgin Mary was one of the most popular advocates among the first converts, who found in the Mother of God a figure compatible with her matrilineal traditions.
The Catedral de Libreville
The Cathedral of Santa María de Libreville is a French colonial-style building, built in the early 20th century. The facade, simple and elegant, features a bell tower and a rosette. The interior houses an altarpiece dedicated to Santa Maria, vitrals with biblical and Marian scenes, and a baptismal pile of marble.
The cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Libreville, who presides over an ecclesiastical province with the dioceses of Franceville, Mouila, Oyem and Port-Gentil.
The Fang People and the Virgin Mary
The Fang, the largest ethnic group in Gabon, are a Bantu people with a rich spiritual tradition. His traditional religion focuses on the veneration of the ancestors ("byeri") and belief in a supreme being ("Zame ye Mebeghe"). The Virgin Mary has been integrated into this symbolic universe: the Fang faithful associate her with the mother of the clan, the guardian of tradition and the protector of children.
Gabon and Marian Ecology
Gabon is one of the most wooded countries in the world: 85 per cent of its territory is covered by tropical forests. The Catholic Church in Gabon has promoted an ecological spirituality linked to the Virgin Mary, seeing in the Mother of God the protector of creation. Marian celebrations include prayers for forest conservation and the protection of Gabonese biodiversity.
