Origin: the Apostolic Vicariate of Cameroon (1890)

The Catholic presence organized in Cameroon began on 18 March 1890, when Pope Leo XIII erected the Apostolic Vicariate of Cameroon, separating it from the Vicariate of the Two Guinean in Gabon. The first missionaries were the Fathers of the Holy Spirit (espionans), a French congregation with great experience in Africa.

The first apostolic vicar was Heinrich Vieter, SAC (1904- 1914), a German missionary of the Society of the Divine Word, as Cameroon was then a German protectorate (Kamerun). After World War I, the territory became French and the French missionaries took over.

The Cathedral and the Archdiocese

The Apostolic Vicariate was renamed the Vicariate of Yaoundé in 1931 and raised to the Metropolitan Archdiocese on September 14, 1955. The cathedral of Notre-Dame des Victoires became the seat of the Archbishop of Yaoundé, who presides over an ecclesiastical province with six suffranian dioceses: Bafia, Ebolowa, Kribi, Mbalmayo, Obala and Sangmélima.

The cathedral is a French colonial-style building with a wide ship, a semi-circular apse and a facade with two towers. The interior houses an altarpiece dedicated to Our Lady of Victories, vitrals with biblical and Marian scenes, and a pulpit carved with Cameroonian motives.

The Basilica of Mary Queen of the Apostles

In addition to the cathedral, Yaoundé houses the minor Basilica of Mary Queen of the Apostles (Marie Reine des Apôtres), a Marian sanctuary of great importance in Cameroon. The Basilica, built in the second half of the 20th century, commemorates the role of the Virgin Mary in the foundation of the Church and in the evangelization of Africa.

The spiriians in Cameroon

The Fathers of the Holy Spirit (CSSp) were the first Catholic missionaries in Cameroon and remain an active presence in the country. His missionary work, which began in the German colonial era, continued under the French mandate and after independence in 1960. The spiriians have trained many Cameroonian priests, religious and catechists.

"Cameroon is a mosaic of cultures and languages. The Virgin Mary is the point of unity of all Cameroonians."- Archdiocese of Yaoundé

Simon Mpeke: Baba Simon, venerable Cameroonian

In 2023, the Catholic Church declared Simon Mpeke Venerable (1906- 1988), known as "Baba Simon" (Father Simon), a Cameroonian catechist who dedicated his life to the evangelization of the Tupuri and mundang peoples of northern Cameroon. Baba Simon is the first Cameroonian to receive this recognition, a step before beatification. His life of simplicity, prayer and service to the poorest is an example of African holiness.
