Loango and Linzolo: the Marian cradle of the Congo
Loango · Linzolo · Congo-Brazzaville · Origins of evangelization
The cities of Loango and Linzolo, on the Atlantic coast of the Republic of the Congo, are the places where the Catholic evangelization of the Congo began in the 15th century. The Portuguese Capuchin missionaries planted here the first seeds of the Catholic faith, and the Virgin Mary was from the beginning the central vocation of the new Christian community.
The kingdom of Loango and the arrival of Christianity
The kingdom of Loango was one of the most important kingdoms on the West Coast of Africa. Located in the present Republic of the Congo and Gabon, the Kingdom of Loango was a shopping centre that connected the interior of Africa with European and American markets. The Portuguese arrived in Loango in the 15th century and, together with the merchants, the Capuchin missionaries came.
The Capuchin established missions in Loango and Linzolo, where they baptized members of the local aristocracy and founded the first Christian communities in the Congo. The Virgin Mary was one of the most popular advocations among the first converts, who found in the Mother of God a figure compatible with her own matrilineal traditions.
Linzolo: the first mission
Linzolo, located in the Kouilou region, was one of the first Catholic missions in the Congo. The missionaries built a small church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and established a school where local children learned to read, write and catechesis. The mission of Linzolo was the starting point for the evangelization of the whole region.
El catolicismo en el Congo-Brazzaville
The Republic of the Congo (Congo-Brazzaville) has a significant Catholic population, concentrated mainly in the Dioceses of Brazzaville, Pointe-Noire and Owando. The archdiocese of Brazzaville, erected in 1890, is the oldest in the country. The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Brazzaville is the center of the Catholic life of the country.
The Virgin Mary in the vili culture
The vili, the village of Loango, have a matrilineal structure where the blood line is transmitted by the mother. The Virgin Mary has been integrated into this tradition: the faithful vili venerate her as the "mother" of the Christian community, which unites the faithful around prayer and charity. Marian celebrations in Loango and Linzolo include songs in the vili language, traditional dances and fish and fruit offerings.
Military heritage
The ruins of the Loango and Linzolo missions are a historical heritage of the Republic of the Congo. The vestiges of colonial churches, the tombs of missionaries and the liturgical objects preserved in local museums are testimony to the origins of the Catholic faith in Central Africa.
