Sunyani · Ghana · Marian Pilgrimage in the Heart of Ghana
In the hills near Sunyani, the capital of the Brong- Ahafo region of Ghana, the Marian Shrine of Amanposo is a pilgrimage center that attracts thousands of Ghanaian faithful each year. The Marian Grotto, surrounded by tropical vegetation, is a place of prayer, retreat and healing.
The sanctuary in the hills of Sunyani
The Marian Shrine of Amanposo is located in a natural setting of forest hills a few kilometres from Sunyani. The place was chosen by the Catholic missionaries who worked in the region of Brong@-@ Ahafo as a centre of retreat and Marian pilgrimage. The natural grotto, adorned with a statue of the Virgin, became the focal point of the Marian devotion of the Diocese of Sunyani.
The diocesan pilgrimage
Every year, the Diocese of Sunyani organizes a diocesan pilgrimage to Amanposo that brings together faithful from all over the region. The pilgrimage includes walking to the grotto, Eucharistic celebration in the open air, community prayer of the Rosary and anointing of the sick. The faithful come with intentions of healing, thanks and a request for thanks.
The sanctuary has grown over the years: stations of the Via Cruces have been added on the access road, an event hall for retreats and a guest house for pilgrims who wish to stay overnight.
Ghana: A country of growing Marian devotion · Global Voices
Ghana is a country where the Catholic Church is growing, especially in the south and centre of the country. Marian devotion is expressed through prayer groups, co-fradies of the Rosary, pilgrimages to local sanctuaries and Marian celebrations in parishes. The Shrine of Amanposo is one of several Marian centers that are emerging in Ghana in response to the demand of the faithful to have their own places of pilgrimage, not imported from Europe.
