The Marian Shrine of Bansi in Kasai
Bansi
In the province of Kasai, in the centre of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Marian shrine of Bansi is a pilgrimage place where the Luba and Luba-kasai peoples venerate the Virgin Mary. Founded by the CCM missionaries, the sanctuary reflects the inculturation of the Catholic faith in the Luba culture.
Los CICM en Kasai
The Missionaries of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (CIMC), known as "parents of Scheut," were one of the most active congregations in the evangelization of the Belgian Congo. Founded in 1862 in Scheut, Belgium, CICM established missions in Kasai in the late 19th century, working among the Luba peoples, the region's largest ethnic group.
The Luba are a Bantu people with a rich cultural tradition: their kingdom, the Great Luba, was one of the most important political powers in Central Africa before colonization. The Luba social structure, based on patrilineal clans and a complex network of alliances, was respected by the missionaries, who promoted an inculturated evangelization.
The Shrine of Bansi
The Bansi shrine was founded by the CCM missionaries as a centre of Marian devotion for the Catholics of Kasai. The church, built with local materials (adobe bricks, straw ceiling and, later, concrete), became the meeting point of the region's Catholic communities.
The annual pilgrimages to Bansi bring together thousands of faithful from the provinces of Kasai, Kasai Central and Kasai Oriental. The celebrations include solemn masses, processions with the image of the Virgin, prayer of the Rosary in tshiluba and traditional luba songs adapted to the liturgy.
Inculturación authorisation
Luba culture has a deep spirituality linked to the ancestors, the earth and the rites of initiation. The Virgin Mary has been integrated into this symbolic universe: the Luba faithful associate her with the mother of the clan ("mother mukulu"), the guardian of tradition and the protector of children. The Marian celebrations in Bansi incorporate elements of the Luba culture: drums, dances and songs in tshiluba.
The Church in Kasai
The Kasai region is one of the most Catholic in the Congo. The Dioceses of Kananga, Mbuji-Mayi and Tshumbe have a very high Catholic density, with numerous parishes, Catholic schools and health centres. The formation of indigenous priests is a priority: the major seminary in Kananga forms tens of seminarians each year.
