Marian devotion
Our Lady Mother of the Mercy of Elele
Elele · State of Rivers · Nigeria · Sanctuary of healing and liberation
In Elele, a city in the State of Rivers in southern Nigeria, the shrine of Our Lady Mother of Mercy is one of Nigeria's most dynamic pilgrimage centers. Thousands of faithful come weekly looking for physical and spiritual healing.
Elele: a living sanctuary
The shrine of Elele is one of those places where the Catholic faith is lived with an intensity that surprises European visitors. The prayer and healing services, which are held several times a week, bring together thousands of faithful who come from all over the State of Rivers and from neighbouring states (Imo, Abia, Anambra). The Virgin Mary is invoked as Mother of Mercy, an advocation that emphasizes her role as an intercessor before God.
The culture of healing in Nigeria
Nigeria is a country where the culture of spiritual healing is very strong. The Pentecostal churches and the healing pastors attract millions of faithful with promises of miraculous healing. In this context, the Elele shrine offers a Catholic alternative: healing through Marian prayer, sacraments and devotion to the Virgin Mary, without the media show of Pentecostal preachers.
The healing testimonies
The testimonies of healing in Elele are numerous: faithful who claim to have been cured of chronic diseases, released from addictions, released from spiritual problems after pilgrimage to the sanctuary. The Church has not formally verified any of these testimonies, but its accumulation has made Elele a reference centre for the spirituality of Catholic healing in Nigeria.
