Our Lady of Africa: The Origin of the Invocation

The advocation of Our Lady of Africa has its origin in the Marian devotion that Catholic missionaries promoted on the African continent since the 19th century. The idea of a patron Virgin of Africa arose in the context of the great African missions, when the missionary congregations wanted an advocation that unified Marian devotion throughout the continent.

The Claretian missionaries, who arrived in Equatorial Guinea in the second half of the 19th century, adopted this vocation as one of the centres of their mission. The Virgin of Africa was venerated as the mother of African Christians, who intercede for the evangelization of the continent.

The devotion in Equatorial Guinea

In Equatorial Guinea, devotion to Our Lady of Africa is linked to the country's missionary history. The churches dedicated to this advocation are located in Malabo, Bata and other localities. The Feasts of Our Lady of Africa include solemn masses, processions and cultural acts.

The Bubi and Fang peoples have welcomed this apvocation with enthusiasm: the Virgin of Africa is seen as the mother of all Africans, which unites the peoples of the continent in the Catholic faith.

Marian devotion in the ecuatoginean diaspora

The emigration of Ecuadorian Guineans to Spain, Cameroon, Gabon and other countries has brought devotion to Our Lady of Africa to the diaspora. The ecuatoguinean communities abroad maintain Marian devotion as a link to their land of origin and as an expression of their Catholic identity.

"The Virgin of Africa is the mother of all who speak Spanish in Africa. She unites us to Spain and all of Africa."

Guinea Ecuatorial en la Iglesia universal

Equatorial Guinea occupies a unique place in the universal Church: it is the only Spanish-speaking country in Africa, which makes it a bridge between the Spanish-speaking Church in Latin America and Spain, and the African Church. Ecuatoginean priests and religious study in Spanish seminars and participate in Spanish-African ecclesial congresses.
