Mary Holy Mother of Africa of Ijebu Ode
Ijebu Ode · State of Ogun · Nigeria · Marian Yoruba Center
In Ijebu Ode, one of the historic cities of the Yoruba people in southwestern Nigeria, the shrine of Mary Holy Mother of Africa is a centre of Marian devotion that integrates the Catholic faith with Yoruba spirituality.
Ijebu Ode: ciudad sagrada yoruba
Ijebu Ode is one of the oldest and most important cities of the Yoruba people, known for their trade, culture and spirituality. The city is the seat of the king (Awujale) of Ijebu, one of the most respected traditional monarchies in Nigeria. In this context of deep Yoruba tradition, the Catholic faith has taken root in a particular way: inculturation.
Mary Holy Mother of Africa
The advocation of Mary Holy Mother of Africa was adopted by the diocese of Ijebu Ode as an expression of a Marian faith that is, at the same time, universal and African. The Virgin Mary is not a European figure imposed by the missionaries, but a Mother who has African characteristics, who speaks African languages, who understands the concerns of African mothers.
In the Yoruba cosmovence, motherhood is a sacred concept: the mother ("iyá") is the protector of the home, the mediator between the living and the ancestors, the one who gives life and the one who supports it. The Virgin Mary, as Mother of God and Mother of the Church, fits this category in a way that does not need complex theological explanations.
The pilgrimage to Ijebu Ode
The sanctuary of Mary Holy Mother of Africa receives pilgrims from the diocese of Ijebu Ode and from the neighbouring dioceses (Lagos, Abeokuta, Ibadan). Marian celebrations - especially in May and October - include yoruba songs, adapted liturgical dances and fruit and flower offerings.
