Kumasi: the city of the blood of the Ashanti

Kumasi is the historic capital of the Ashanti Empire, one of the most important political and military powers in West Africa before British colonization. The name "Ashanti" means, according to a popular etymology, "due to the blood" (of a ritual sacrifice that, according to legend, allowed the victory of the people against the colonizers).

The Catholic missionaries arrived in Kumasi in the late 19th century, after the British submitted to the Ashanti Empire. Evangelization was slow and difficult: the Ashanti, a people proud of their traditions, did not become a mass. But over time, a significant Catholic community took root in Kumasi.

Marian devotion in Ashanti culture

The Ashanti have a matrilineal structure: inheritance, identity and belonging to the clan are transmitted through the mother line. The mother is the central figure of the Ashanti family. In this context, the Virgin Mary has been welcomed with a surprising nature: the Mother of God fits into a system of values where motherhood is the axis of society.

The Rosary's cofradies in Kumasi are very active, and Marian prayer groups meet in parishes, homes and markets. The Virgin Mary is invoked as a protector of families, healer of the sick and comfort of the afflicted.

The archdiocese of Kumasi

The archdiocese of Kumasi is one of the largest in Ghana, with a Catholic population in hundreds of thousands. The Cathedral of St. Peter, in the centre of Kumasi, is the liturgical center of the diocese. Marian celebrations - especially in May and October - are events that mobilize thousands of faithful.
