Documented history

The Holy See places the birth of Augustine in Tagaste on November 13, 354. His mother, Saint Monica, was a Christian; he received a rhetorical education and went through a long intellectual and spiritual path before his conversion. He was baptized by Saint Ambrosio in Milan during the Easter vigil of April 24, 387, according to the pontifical catechesis dedicated to his life.

On returning to Africa, Augustine settled in Hipona. He was ordained a priest in 391 and a bishop in 395. His task combined preaching, study, clergy training, care for the poor and orphans and organization of monastic communities. Benedict XVI's audience points out that he ruled the diocese for more than thirty years and that his influence was extended by the African Church and later Christian tradition.

Agustín died on 28 August 430, while Hipona was besieged by vandals. Their writings - among them the Packaging and theological and pastoral works - they are part of the documented history of their Christian reception. The file does not reproduce long quotes and distinguishes its texts from subsequent devotional reconstructions.

Marian Tradition and Devotion

The Basilica of Annaba is a Catholic sanctuary dedicated to Saint Augustine and the local population also calls it Lalla Bouna, "Our Lady of Hipona," according to the page of the Catholic Church of Algeria. This local denomination shows a Marian dimension of the place, but it is not presented here as an apparition or supernatural approval of a story. The history of the temple, its restorations and the prayer of the faithful belong to the documented Christian cult.

Mary is venerated and asked to intercede before God. Augustine is venerated as a saint and a master, but not worshipped. This distinction protects the sense of the pilgrimage: the building guides to God and to the memory of a Christian bishop, without attributing divinity to the basilica, relic or image.

Ecclesial State

Agustín es Catholic saint, bishop and doctor of the Churchas well as a figure received in other Christian traditions. The ecclesial state refers to its veneration and place in the Church; it does not make all the episodes of its autobiographical writings or every tradition associated with Hipona supernatural facts.

Anecdotes and stories

The best known scene of its conversion belongs to the Packaging, where Augustine reports that a child voice led him to open and read. It is an autobiographical and spiritual testimony of the author himself, not a data that should be separated from his literary genre. Another significant memory is that of his last days during the siege: tradition tells that he asked to have in sight the penitential psalms while he was ill. Both scenes help to understand their interior without making them a geographical legend of Annaba's building.

Prayer

St. Augustine of Hipona, pastor and teacher, pray for those who seek the truth, for the pastors and for those who wish to return to God after a difficult path. He asks the Virgin Mary to lead us to Jesus Christ and teach us to live with humility, charity and hope. Amen.
