San José María Rubio

San José María Rubio Peralta, Jesuit known as the "apostle of Madrid," dedicated his ministry to preaching, confession, spiritual exercises and attention to poor people. Its remains are venerated in the parish of San Francisco de Borja in Madrid.

Where is he?

The marker points to the parish of San Francisco de Borja, on the street of Serrano 104 in Madrid. The Archdiocese of Madrid indicates that the remains of the saint are there and that many people continue to approach to venerate him and to entrust themselves to his intercession. The position comes from the OSM geometry of the parish and not from a memory-remembered coordinate.

Documented history

José María Rubio was born in Dalías, Almeria, in 1864, was ordained a priest and entered the Society of Jesus. His pastoral service in Madrid won him the popular title of an apostle of the city. Ecclesial sources highlight their long hours of confessional, preaching and spiritual exercises, along with constant attention to workers, families and people in need.

He died in 1929. His remains were transferred to Madrid on 10 June 1953 and were linked to the Jesuit church of San Francisco de Borja. The Holy See presents it among the saints canonized in Madrid on 4 May 2003 by John Paul II. Its ecclesial state is therefore that of canonized saint of the Catholic Church.

Pastoral service and Marian devotion

The life of Rubio is not understood as a search for personal protagonism, but as a ministry of accompaniment. Confession, spiritual direction and exercises are attached to mercy and the call to conversion. The diocesan source remembers him as a priest given to the Word and the sacraments, especially close to those who needed guidance and hope.

In Madrid he promoted the work of the Maries of the Sagrarian, an initiative of prayer and care of the sacred. That Marian dimension does not move Christ: Mary is venerated and asked to intercede, while worship corresponds only to God. No undocumented apparition, private revelation or miracle by the sources consulted is added to this sheet.

The tomb as a place of prayer

The visit to San Francisco de Borja links a historical memory with a current practice of prayer. The temple is not presented as a stage of extraordinary facts without source, but as the place where its remains are preserved and where the faithful ask for help to live the faith. The history of the transfer explains why Madrid remains the center of its public devotion.

The intercession of a saint does not replace Christian responsibility. Remembering Blonde invites you to listen, reconcile, care for the poor and go to the sacraments with freedom and truth.

Madrid and the memory of the ministry

The term "apostle of Madrid" summarizes a pastoral relationship, not a civil title or an affirmation of exclusivity. Rubio arrived in a city marked by great social changes and dedicated time to people seeking guidance, comfort and training. The Archdiocese continues to present its memory in relation to the confession, preaching and celebration of the sacraments, which are the data that support this fact sheet.

The tomb in San Francisco de Borja gives a concrete place to a story that developed in many neighborhoods and works. There you can pray for those who work in the pastoral service of Madrid and those who need to regain hope. The invocation of Mary is formulated as a request for intercession: the center of the life of Blonde was Christ, and Marian devotion is ordered to follow him with humility.
