Saint Kizito, martyr of Uganda

San Kizito is venerated as the youngest of the Catholic martyrs of Uganda canonized by St. Paul VI. The pontifical sources present him as a boy of the royal court, baptized by Carlos Lwanga shortly before the death of both. The map links it to the Uganda Martyrs shrine in Namugongo, which is the main cartographed place of its memory, not an alleged exact coordinate of each stretch of its last path.

Where is he?

Namugongo is located in Wakiso district, central Uganda. OpenStreetMap identifies the shrine's enclosure by way 1249579321, with HTTP 200 response. The tab uses the precision verified_place because the point corresponds to the cartographed sanctuary. The marker does not claim that Kizito was executed exactly on the geometric center of the enclosure or that the place of his individual burial is identified there.

The history of Kizito also passes through Munyonyo, where the tradition of martyrs recalls earlier moments of persecution. To avoid two points that look like two graves of the same saint, this fact sheet adopts Namugongo as the main reference of the joint cult and explains the link with the itinerary of the martyrs.

Documented history

The Apostolic Letter of 1964 and the documentation of beatification list Kizito among Carlos Lwanga's colleagues. The documentary tradition describes him as a young court straw, about fourteen years old according to the pontifical text of canonization. Age belongs to the narration received in the ecclesial documents; no date of birth is added that is not recorded.

The moment the persecution became imminent, Carlos Lwanga baptized several catechumens, including Kizito. The pontifical account then presents the boy by resisting the pressure of the court and walking towards the delusion with others. The liturgical date of the group is June 3 and the tradition places the martyrdom of Kizito in Namugongo on June 3, 1886.

On October 18, 1964, Paul VI canonized Carlos Lwanga, Matías Mulumba and his twenty companions. This act did not make Kizito a figure isolated from others, but confirmed his membership in the group of Ugandan martyrs. The beatification of 1920 had previously recognized martyrdom. The fact sheet retains both stages in order not to present the canonization as if it had been the first ecclesial recognition.

Tradition and Legend

The popular devotion has reminded Kizito as a child or adolescent who did not abandon the faith when faced with violence. This reception has a particular spiritual value for families, catechists and young people. However, the tab does not convert the phrases of the minutes and the pontifical letters into a literal recording or fill with episodes of childhood that the sources do not transmit.

There is no Marian apparition specifically associated with Kizito. The Namugongo shrine is a place of worship for martyrs and pilgrimage. Mary is venerated as Mother and intercessor; worship belongs only to God.

Ecclesial State

Kizito es Holy Catholic martyr canonized by Paul VI in 1964 together with the other Ugandan martyrs. His veneration is celebrated within the memory of the martyrs of Uganda. Canonization expresses the ecclesial recognition of his martyrdom; it does not amount to declaring historically proven all the devotional details added later.

Anecdotes and stories

The relationship between Kizito and Carlos Lwanga is the best known feature of his history. The adult who headed to the pajes did not just protect himself, but accompanied a group of catechumenos and baptized Kizito when the possibility of being arrested was already real. That is why the memory of Kizito appears in the catechesis next to that of Lwanga: one remembers the responsibility of the accompanying and the other the perseverance of the young man who receives this help.

The pilgrimages to Namugongo gather the history of several martyrs and should not be reduced to a single scene. The concentration of memories in a sanctuary makes visible the unity of the group, while the chart keeps the difference between the map point of the sanctuary and the specific places of each episode, some of which do not have an unequivocal coordinate.

Prayer

St. Kizito, young martyr of Uganda, pray for children and young people, for their families and for those who teach them to live with truth and hope. He asks the Virgin Mary to lead us to Jesus Christ and help us to remain firm in good. Amen.
