Documented history

Maria De Mattias was born in 1805. The pontifical biography describes his desire to teach faith and his subsequent founding activity. In 1834 he began the work that would give rise to the Adoratrices of the Blood of Christ. His apostolate was extended through houses and educational activities; the source of the Holy See speaks of approximately seventy foundations, which is preserved as a reference of its expansion and not as a figure rebuilt by memory.

He died in 1866. The same biography indicates that it was initially buried in the summer cemetery by Pius IX. This information is not sufficient to set on the map an inner point of the current tomb; therefore the marker remains in the documented town of Acuto, with a prudent and explicit precision.

It was canonized on 18 May 2003. Its ecclesial state is that of of the Catholic Church. Canonization recognizes its holiness and intercession in the life of the Church, but it does not automatically turn into documented history all devotional accounts that can circulate on it.

Mary, tradition and devotion

The pontifical source recalls that during a youth crisis, Mary entrusted her inner darkness to the Virgin. It also links a popular mission preached in Vallecorsa in 1822 with the momentum it received to undertake a similar mission. Here it is presented as part of the ecclesial biography, without turning it into an apparition or adding words that do not contain.

The Marian spirituality of De Mattias is expressed as a subsidiary trust and a desire to bring people to Christ through teaching and community life. Mary is venerated and asked to intercede; worship is addressed only to God. The sources examined do not contain a personal apparition or an autonomous legend linked to the tomb.

Anecdotes and stories

His legacy can be seen in the relationship between teaching and missionary expansion. The number of foundations and the memory of Acto show a work that spread from a local context, without losing the concrete character of education and religious life. The point on the map retains that territorial link and declares its limits.
