Santa Mariam Baouardy, also known as Mary of Jesus Crucified, was a Palestinian Carmelite whose life was linked to Bethlehem. The Christian memory reminds her of her humility, her prayer and her service to the foundation of the Carmel of Bethlehem. His history has also become a meeting point for Christians and Muslims who visit his grave.

Documented history

Mariam Baouardy was born in 1846 and died in 1878. She was a Palestinian Carmelite and participated in the foundation of the first Carmelo in Bethlehem. The pontifical documentation of his canonization recalls his origin and religious life, while the memory of Carmel retains the importance of his presence for the Catholic community of the Holy Land.

His grave became a place of pilgrimage for Christians and Muslims. This data is not used to affirm an ecclesial approval of every story that has been spread about it, but to describe the public reception of his memory. The place brings together a concrete Carmelite history and a devotional coexistence that must be narrated with respect and without turning all experience of the pilgrims into a proven miracle.

He canonized it on May 17, 2015, along with other figures of the universal Church. The recognition of his holiness refers to his life and veneration according to the canonical process. It does not amount to an independent statement of supernatural over every mystical vision or experience attributed to it.

Marian Tradition and Devotion

The Carmelite sources and the documentation of their cause relate Mariam to mystical experiences and the call to find in Bethlehem. They are presented as testimonies contained in the documentation of their life and process, not as separate Marian apparitions. Research does not provide a decree that makes every experience a supernatural phenomenon compulsory for the faithful.

Her Marian devotion is understood from the spirituality of Carmel: Mary is venerated as Mother and intercessor and leads to Christ. Adoration belongs only to God. The tab avoids presenting Mariam as the protagonist of an apparition and avoids affirming undocumented miracles in the sources used.

Ecclesial State

Anecdotes and stories

One of the most significant features of his memory is that a Palestinian Carmelite was associated with a place that receives people from different religious traditions. The pilgrimage to his grave allows us to remember the history of the Carmel of Bethlehem and the desire for encounter that has accompanied his veneration. This reception does not replace historical documentation, but explains why its figure is still known beyond its own community.
