Return to the most beautiful Blood of Christ linked to the place of the eucharistic miracle of Ludbreg, different from the relic itself: every year, on the first Sunday of September, tens of thousands of pilgrims come in the so-called 'Sveta nedjelja' fulfilling a vote that the Croatian Parliament (Sabor) made in 1739 to ask for the end of the plague.
Documented history and memory received
The eucharistic miracle of Ludbreg is about 1411, when a priest who doubted the real presence saw the consecrated wine become visible blood in the chapel of the Batthyány castle. The relic was moved and examined, and Pope Leo X authorized his worship in the 16th century. The Christological devotion that was born from that fact crystallized in 1739, when in the face of a new epidemic of plague the Croatian Parliament (Hrvatski taste) made a solemn vow to build a chapel in Ludbreg and to pilgrim every year to the Precious Blood if the plague ceased; the plague referred, but wars prevented the vote for centuries. Only in 1994, after the independence of Croatia, the Taste renewed and fulfilled that national vow, building the vative chapel of the Holy Blood. Since then the 'Sveta nedjelja' of the first Sunday of September brings together crowds around the Blood of Christ, making Ludbreg the center of Croatian national Eucharistic devotion. It is a fully approved Latin Catholic devotion, rooted in faith in the real presence.
Who venerates the memory
The look is directed to Jesus Christ and to the mystery of his Incarnation, Passion, Resurrection or reign. The image, monument, procession or custom does not act by its own power: it serves the memory of the Gospel and leads to prayer, sacraments, conversion and charity.
History, tradition and discernment
Shrine, pilgrimage and authorized veneration documented. The event of 1411 is presented according to the ecclesial tradition of the sanctuary, distinguishing it from a scientific demonstration. The tab retains the full memory received, but does not convert a legend, a witness or a believing interpretation into a historically demonstrated fact.
