Our Lady of the Tears of Treviglio

Where is he?

The Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of the Tears is located in Treviglio, province of Bergamo, Lombardy, Italy. The location of the sanctuary is documented in OpenStreetMap.

Documented history

The official tourist information of Lombardy describes a sanctuary raised between 1594 and 1619 on the initiative of the community of Treviglio. The same source places the episode that gave rise to his devotion on February 28, 1522: while the French troops threatened the city, an image of the Virgin with the Child, painted on a wall of the ancient monastery of Saint Augustine, was weeping.

Tradition

Local tradition relates that sign to Trevigil's protection from looting. The regional tourist source states that the French general Odet de Foix, a devotee of the Virgin, forgave the territory. We present this story as a devotional tradition and history of veneration, not as a doctrinal statement on the supernatural origin of the phenomenon.

Legend

There is no separate legend in the sources consulted, separate from the traditional account of the tears and forgiveness of the city.

Ecclesial State

It consists of the existence of a Catholic sanctuary and a public Marian cult. The name of a decree formally declaring the phenomenon supernatural does not appear in the consulted source; therefore, no more precise ecclesial approval is assigned.

Anecdotes and stories

The construction of the sanctuary between the 16th and 17th centuries shows how the community of Treviglio organized a stable place of worship around a local Marian memory. The reference to General Odet de Foix belongs to the historical tradition transmitted by the sanctuary.

Prayer

Holy Mary, Mother of Tears, pray for us and intercede to your Son for families living in fear, loss or threat. May we learn with you to look at Christ and to ask for peace with a converted heart. Amen.

Documentary extension

The tourist information of the Lombardy Region adds that the process of authentication of the prodigy began in 1583 at the initiative of Saint Charles Borromeo and concluded, according to that source, in 1591, when it was decided to lift the sanctuary. The Council of the Community then appointed four responsible for the work and the first stone was placed on 25 March 1594. The building was built between 1594 and 1619, and the image linked to the story was moved to the main altar in 1619. This is the institutional history of the cult and its sanctuary; it is not presented here as a new independent verification of the phenomenon.

The same resource describes the sanctuary as a small museum: it retains the Marian image painted at the end of the 15th century and works from various times, including contemporary mosaics of Trento Longareti. This is the understanding of the continuity between the local memory of 1522, the construction of a stable space of prayer and the artistic heritage that today accompanies devotion. The map's coordinate remains that of the building identified by OpenStreetMap.
