In South Africa, the Church has Mary Queen Assumed into Heaven as its patron saint, and the KwaZulu-Natal region is the heart of the country's Marian Catholicism, with pilgrimage shrines that attract faithful from all over southern Africa.

- In 1952, during a Marian Congress in Durban for the centenary of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, Mary Queen Assumed into Heaven was proclaimed Patroness of the South African Church.
- Every May 31st, the parish of Ntshongweni, near Durban, celebrates the pilgrimage to Our Lady Mediatrix of All Graces, and faithful come to pray to her from all over southern Africa.
- Several shrines in KwaZulu-Natal were born out of the nostalgia of European missionaries, who transplanted their devotions to African soil: the Rhenish Our Lady of Kevelaer in Mariannhill and Mary Ratschitz in the diocese of Dundee.
