History of Marian devotion in Vanuatu
Christianity arrived in the islands of Vanuatu with missionaries in the 19th and 20th centuries. Devotion to the Virgin Mary, introduced by the evangelists, took root in the local Christian communities, who found in Mary a maternal figure close to their own culture.
The Marian devotions present in Vanuatu reflect the diversity of missionary traditions: the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Lourdes. Small Catholic communities keep devotion to Mary alive through the recitation of the Rosary and the celebration of Marian feasts.

The Marian mission in the Vanuatu archipelago
Vanuatu, formerly known as New Hebridas, was evangelized by French Marist and English Presbyterian missionaries since the 19th century. The Catholic Church, although a minority in front of Protestant churches (approximately 12% of the population), has kept the devotion to the Virgin Mary alive through the parishes established in the main islands of the Holy Spirit, Malekula and Egate. The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Port Vila, built in the 1900s with coral and volcanic stone, is the center of the country's Marian life. His bell tower, visible from the port, has for generations guided the Catholic sailors who entrust themselves to Mary, Estrella del Mar, as they arrive in the capital.
The Melanesian culture of Vanuatu, with its strong sense of community and respect for ancestors, found in Mary a familiar and approachable figure. Missionaries translated Marian prayers into Bislama (the country's lingua franca) and the vernacular languages, allowing the recitation of the Rosary to become integrated into the daily life of the villages. On Pentecost Island, known for its land diving tradition (a precursor to bungee jumping), Catholic communities celebrate the Assumption with dances and songs that blend Latin liturgy with the traditional music of tam-tams and bamboo flutes.
Nuestra Señora de Lourdes de Luganville
In Luganville, the second largest city in Vanuatu, located on the island of the Holy Spirit, is the parish of Our Lady of Lourdes, built by French marists in 1953. The church houses a replica of the Grotto of Massabielle, built with local volcanic rock and embedded sea shells, which is a place of pilgrimage for the Catholics of the island. Every 11 February, the community celebrates a solemn mass followed by a procession with torches that descends from the church to the Sarakata River, where the baptismal promises are renewed and the water is blessed, in a local adaptation of the Lourdes tradition.

Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Malekula
On Malekula Island, Vanuatu's second largest, the parish of Our Lady of the Rosary in Lakatoro serves the Catholic communities scattered along the island's east coast. The church, built in 1968 using local materials, features a hand-carved altar depicting Our Lady of the Rosary with Melanesian features, surrounded by hibiscus flowers and palm fronds. The community celebrates the month of the Rosary (October) with daily gatherings, with each village taking turns hosting the prayer, strengthening the bonds between Catholic families on an island where the majority of the population adheres to traditional animist beliefs.

Inmaculada Concepción de Santo
On the island of the Holy Spirit, the largest in Vanuatu, the parish of the Immaculate Conception in the town of Luganville serves the Catholic community of the north of the archipelago. The church was built in 1958 by French marists and stands out for its nangai wood altar carved with the motifs of Melanesian culture. The image of the Immaculate Conception, a size of cedar wood donated by the Church of New Caledonia, was crowned in 2008 by the Bishop of Port Vila. The December 8 party is celebrated with a procession that runs through the streets of Luganville and a missionary fair that raises funds for the Catholic schools on the island.

Vanuatu was the site of one of the most remarkable episodes in Pacific missionary history: the martyrdom of Blessed Peter Chanel, the first martyr of Oceania, killed on the island of Futuna (near Vanuatu) in 1841. Although Futuna now belongs to Wallis and Futuna, his witness inspired the Marist missionaries who evangelized Vanuatu. The Virgin Mary was invoked by the missionaries as the "Star of Evangelization," and her protection guided the first Vanuatan catechists who carried the faith from island to island, often facing hostility from tribal chiefs who saw Christianity as a threat to their authority.
The Catholic Church in Vanuatu has played a significant role in promoting peace and reconciliation between the country's French- and English-speaking communities. The Virgin Mary, invoked as "Queen of Peace," has been presented as a model of unity and dialogue. In 2015, following the devastating Cyclone Pam, which destroyed 90% of the buildings in Port Vila, the Sacred Heart Cathedral became a center for receiving and distributing aid. The image of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, which miraculously remained intact amidst the rubble, is now venerated with special devotion as a sign of Mary's protection over the people of Vanuatu.
