Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception of Gyesan
Patron of Korea
From the point of view historical-documented, today known as Catholic Cathedral of Gyesan-dong in Daegu was driven by the French missionary P. Robert A.P. (1853-1922)who arrived in Daegu in the late 19th century. In 1898 a first traditional Korean-style wooden temple was built, which was destroyed by a fire a few months later. Father Robert then developed a new project and imported glass and galvanized plates from France and Hong Kong, materials difficult to obtain in Korea at that time; the construction of the new building concluded in 1902, which makes this church one of the few Christian structures of early 1900 preserved in Daegu.

En 1911after the ecclesiastical reorganization, the church of Gyesan was separated from the ancient "Catholic Parish Joseon" and became the main parish of the Daegu areawith Father Robert as a priest. In the complex there is also a commemorative living room, Gwandeokjeongwhere the remains of 65 Catholic martyrs, sign of the arraigo and the price of faith in the region. The church played an important role in the promotion of Catholicism in the Yeongnam area, strengthening the Church's presence in the south of the country.
As regards local traditions or legends specific linked to a miraculous intervention of the Immaculate Conception in this place, no constan in the sources consulted (official Korean tourist site, local online chronicles, travel guides and news summaries). The Marian devotion around the Immaculate is rather part of the general context of South Korea, where Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is the main patron of the Church in Korea and the Korean peopleaccording to various ecclesial testimonies.
The image and the sanctuary
Available sources describe Gyesan as "Catholic Cathedral of Gyesan-dong in Daegu" and, in some tourist media, such as Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes / Cathedral of Gyesan, since today the whole also hosts a museum of history of Christianity in the city. The official Marian title of the temple is not expressly indicated in the documents consulted, nor is there a technical fact sheet that accurately identifies the specific advocation of the main image of the main altar; therefore, is not documented a detailed description of a specific image of the Immaculate Conception of Gyesan.
As regards building, the cathedral is described with plant of cruz latina, with clearly marked ship and transept, visible from both inside and outside. His style is mainly Romanesque, accompanied by elements neogóticos like glass and pinacles. The church is rite católico latino and is linked to the history of the archdiocese of Daegu, although the sources consulted do not explicitly mention it as a minor basilica or as a national sanctuary. The set includes, in addition to the temple, the Daegu Jeil Christian History Museumwhich presents the history of Christianity in Daegu.
As the information available does not specify the image type (size, marble sculpture, polychrome plaster image, etc.), and its specific iconography (posture, attributes, crown, presence or non-presence of serpent under its feet, etc.), must be strictly indicated: there is no precise iconographic description of the image of the Immaculate Conception venerated in the cathedral of Gyesan in the accessible sources..
Sponsorship and coronation
At the national level, the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is recognized as Chief Patron of Korea and the Korean Peopleaccording to the tradition of the Church in Korea and various secondary documents and pastoral notes. This patron is venerated in a particularly solemn way at the Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul, which holds the title of Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. The devotion to the Immaculate in Gyesan is therefore inserted within this national Marian patronality, although the Daegu temple is not listed as a specific national Marian sanctuary of the Immaculate in the consulted sources.
In relation to the patronazgo local (city, diocese or archdiocese of Daegu) applied specifically to the advocation of the Immaculate Conception in the Cathedral of Gyesan, there is no official decree or proclamation in the sources consulted to indicate it as a patron of the archdiocese of Daegu; online public information focuses mainly on its historical, architectural and martyrdom importance.
About a possible canonical coronation of an image of the Immaculate Conception in Gyesan- dong, neither the sanctuaries repertory, nor the diocesan notes available, nor the main journalistic bases consulted mention such an event. Therefore, following the requested criterion:
> does not contain a documented canonical coronation.
Party and devotion
La main party of this advocation is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, held throughout the Church 8 December. In South Korea, the Immaculate is a day of special relief, being the main patron of the Church in Korea, and is solemnly celebrated in the country's cathedrals and parishes. It is reasonable to assume that this solemnity is of particular importance in a historical temple like Gyesan; however, do not contain, in the sources consulted, official numerical data of inflow or detailed descriptions of processions or Romeries of Gyesan on that date.
The cathedral of Gyesan is recognized as one of the key places to understand the expansion of Catholicism in the Yeongnam regionand is therefore a regular part of the tours of visitors and pilgrims interested in the history of Christianity in Daegu. In the compound, the presence of the memorial hall and the relics of 65 Catholic martyrs promotes a devotion marked by of the martyrsprayer for the persecuted and reflection on fidelity to faith. They are not described in the specific popular customs sources (e.g., night Marian vigil or neighborhood-specific processions) exclusively linked to the Immaculate Conception in Gyesan; therefore, it should be strictly stated: do not contain popular traditions of this advocation in Gyesan- dong in the sources consulted.
Link to the Rosary
Not found in available sources a specific and documented link between the invocation of the Immaculate Conception in the cathedral of Gyesan and a unique practice of Rosary (for example, the Rosary's cofradies officially erected in that temple, own rosarian pilgrimages or particular promises). Therefore, from a strictly historical point of view:
> there is no documented unique relationship between this advocation in Gyesan- dong and the prayer of the Rosary.
However, in Catholic spirituality, the Immaculate Conception takes a central place in the contemplation of the joyful mysteries and in the meditation of the plan of salvation that the Rosary proposes
