Immaculate Conception of Jinan (Jiangjunmiao)
The Church of the Immaculate Conception, known locally as the church of Jiangjunmiao, is the oldest Catholic temple in Jinan: its origin dates back to 1651, founded by the Spanish Franciscan Jaboulet. He was a cathedral of the diocese until 1905 and remains a living parish of the Archdiocese of Jinan.
🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- Founded in 1651 by the Spanish Franciscan missionary Jaboulet, it is the oldest Catholic church in Jinan and one of the roots of faith in Shandong.
- Demolved in 1724 by order of Emperor Yongzheng following the controversy of Chinese rites, it was rebuilt between 1864 and 1866 in Romanesque and granite style.
- It served as a cathedral of the Diocese of Jinan until 1905, when the seat passed to the new cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Hongjialou.
- Closed in 1966 during the Cultural Revolution, it reopened to veneration on June 23, 1979, and in 2013 it was declared well protected cultural from the province of Shandong.

Under the title of the Immaculate Conception, this humble temple keeps almost four centuries of fidelity from the Catholics of Jinan, surviving imperial demolitions and persecutions until they return to veneration.
