Maria Auxiliadora de Shillong - The Khani Hill Cathedral

The Cathedral of Mary Auxiliadora, in the district of Laitumkhrah, is the seat of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Shillong. The present Art Déco temple was erected from 1936, after a fire destroyed the church erected in 1913 by the German Salvatorial missionaries on Good Friday of that year.

🌹 Wonders and anecdotes

  • Its foundation rests on sand-filled ditches, without rigid binding to the rock: a solution designed for the building to be mocked during earthquakes, frequent in Meghalaya.
  • The first stone was blessed on October 25, 1936, the feast of Christ the King, on the very site of the church of 1913, the first of the mission of Assam.
  • It preserves vitrals made in Grenoble (France) in 1947 and a Way Cruciis of fourteen terracotta relief stations.
  • Under the cathedral, excavated on the hill, an iglesian-grotto opens; in 1980, centenary of the Catholic Church in northeastern India, the temple was declared sanctuary and pilgrimage center.
