Origin and history
La tradition local, shared in Lebanese Christianity, states that when Jesus visited the regions of Tyre and Sidon (cf. Mt 15: 21), the Virgin Mary accompanied him to the vicinity of Sidon, waiting in a grotto located in the hills of Maghdouché as He preached. That grotto, known as Mata (in Arabic, "Espera"), it has since been a place of uninterrupted Marian veneration by the first Christian communities in the area. In this context the advocation of Our Lady of the Wait or Mantarawhich underlines Mary's attitude that awaits the return of the Son.
As for the documented historythe sources indicate that the shrine of Saydet el-Mantara is known from the Antiquity as a Christian place and that the grotto has been used as a space of veneration for centuries. After times of abandonment and destruction in the turbulent history of the region, the place was rediscovered and restored by the local Christian communities, particularly the Melchese Catholics, who raised the present sanctuary and the tower with the great statue of the Virgin at the entrance of the people of Maghdouché. Today it is considered one of the main Marian shrines in southern Lebanon and an important destination for religious pilgrimage and tourism.
The image and the sanctuary
The invocation is mainly represented by a gran estatua de la Virgen located on the top of a tower that dominates Maghdouché. The modern-style image shows Mary standing, in a prayer and protective attitude, with her arms extended to the country - it is noted in some descriptions that her hands are particularly oriented towards Beirut -, stressing her closeness and custody over the Lebanese people. The statue crown a high structure visible from the distance, becoming a recognizable sign of the sanctuary and Marian presence in the region. The exact material of the sculpture (stone, concrete, metal, etc.) no consta clearly in the sources consulted.
El sanctuary is known as Shrine of Saydet el-Mantara, Our Lady of the Waitand is built next to the revered grotto as a place of waiting for Mary. The complex includes the cave, conditioned as a small underground chapel, and the upper temple with spaces of veneration and reception of pilgrims. At the entrance of the village, the tower with the image of the Virgin is part of the architectural complex of the sanctuary, which has become one of the main spiritual and tourist sites of southern Lebanon. The sources expressly present it as Marian sanctuary and place of pilgrimage; no consta which has the official title of a minor basilica or which is declared a specific national sanctuary, although it is a reference centre for the Melchian Catholic Church in the region.
Sponsorship and coronation
Our Lady of the Wait, or of Mantara, is especially venerated as protection of childrenFor this reason, many baptizes are celebrated in the sanctuary and their intercession for the life and protection of children is made. The sanctuary is also an important spiritual reference place for Christians in southern Lebanon and, more broadly, for the faithful throughout the country, although the sources consulted no mencionan a formal decree declaring her an official patron of a particular diocese or city.
On the canonical coronationin the documentation available on the shrine of Saydet el-Mantara and on devotion to Our Lady of the Wait does not contain a documented canonical coronation on the part of the Holy See or by pontifical delegation with clearly referred date and authority.
Party and devotion
The sources reflect the importance of the sanctuary as place of pilgrimagewith a strong influx of faithful, especially families and children, who come to the grotto and the image of the Virgin in search of protection, hope and comfort. It is emphasized that it is one of the main religious tourist destinations in the south of the country, which indicates a living and widespread devotion. The invocation is very rooted in the Marian spirituality of Lebanon, where there is a deep love for the Virgin and various national and local advocacy.
As for a litigation fiesta propiathe sources consulted do not require a concrete and universally established date for the "Feast of Our Lady of Hope" in Maghdouché; therefore, no consta clearly the exact date of its main celebration. It is noted, in general terms, that the sanctuary is the scene of numerous celebrations, in particular baptizes and Marian acts, and that the faithful visit it on the occasion of Marian parties and throughout the year, as an expression of confidence in the intercession of Mary in times of trial and difficulty for the country.
Link to the Rosary
The specific sources on Maghdouché and Saydet el-Mantara no documentan a particular historical or institutional link between Our Lady of Hope's advocation and the prayer of Rosary (e.g., own rosarian copradies, special indulgences or a title explicitly linked to the Rosary). In this regard, it can be said that no consta a unique rosarian nexus beyond the usual Marian prayer.
However, in the Marian Catholic spirituality, the Rosary naturally accompanies this devotion: the mysteries of Christ's life contemplated with Mary allow us to meditate on one's own "Wait" by Mary, both in the light moments (the public life of Jesus, his teachings, his ministry in Galilee and the region of Tyre and Sidon) and in the painful and glorious. The advocation of the Wait invites the Rosary to pray as a school of trust and perseverance: just as Mary waited for the Son with faith in the Grotto of Maghdouché, the faithful who prays the Rosary learns to wait in God in the midst of the personal uncertainties and the trials of the Lebanese people and the whole Church.
