Origin and history

Documented history The origin of the temple is located in the 19th century. The first church of Phu Nhai was built in wood in 1866 by the priest Emmanuel Riaño Peace, shortly after the Emperor TĐĐc signed a decree committing not to pursue the Christian community, ending almost three centuries of harsh persecution against Catholics in Vietnam.

The wooden church was replaced by later structures; it is known that the temple was destroyed by a storm in 1929 y reconstruido en 1933, becoming, according to the Vietnamese press, "the largest church in Indochina" at that time. During the war he suffered considerable damage and, already in recent times, the bishop Dominicn Chunzhen undertook a profound renewal in 2003; the temple in its present form was consecrated the 26 September 2004.

The sanctuary received from Benedict XVI the title of minor basilica por decreto del August 12, 2008, becoming one of the four minor basilicas of Vietnam (along with Notre Dame de Ciudad Ho Chi Minh, La Vang and SħKiņn).

Tradition / local context Several Vietnamese divulgative materials describe the area of Phu Nhai-Xuân Phħng as one of the oldest places of origin of Catholicism in Vietnam, and highlight the historical weight of the Catholic community of Bòi Chu. However, no specific Marian legends or specific traditional accounts related to a particular apparition or image have been found in accessible sources under the title "Our Lady of the Rosary of Phu Nhai"; therefore, no consta a local tradition of documented Marian apparitions.

The image and the sanctuary

The Marian Image The sources describe the presence of three great images inside the basilica: in the center, an image of the Virgin Mary, flanqueada por two angels, iconography that is interpreted as a symbol of Christ born and glorified in heaven. Within the church there are also many images of saints, some of them carved in marfil and from France, considered pieces of great artistic value.

Not specified in the sources consulted concrete iconographic title (Rosary, Immaculate, etc.) of the main image and materials of the Marian size, beyond the general mention of the Virgin and ivory sculptures. Therefore, no consta a detailed technical description of a specific image under the name "Our Lady of the Rosary of Phu Nhai."

The sanctuary / temple The temple bears the official name of "Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Phu Nhai" (en vietnamita: The King's Palace of Funky Way). It belongs to the I'm sorry. y se sitúa en Fojim, comuna de Chun Fang, distrito de Chun School, provincia de Nam TYin northern Vietnam.

Architectural, it's a great neoGothic temple of French inspiration, considered one of the most impressive temples in Vietnam. Mide approximately 80 m long, 30–35 m de ancho y 30 m high. The facade is flanked by two high torre-bell tower of 44 m, que albergan four bellssome of them founded in France; a weight around 2 tonnes and is used only in great solemnities.

In front of the temple a big squarewith two highlights: to the left, a mausoleo de 15 m dedicated to 83 martyres and to the right, a column of 17 m crowned by a statue of Santo Domingo, founder of the Order of Preachers. The interior has three ships and abundant decoration: vitrals, altards and numerous sculptures, with a design in a Latin cross plant of the basic type.

Sponsorship and coronation

Patronage The temple is an important diocesan Marian centre in the diocese of Bòi Chu, but the sources consulted do not speak of a formal decree that proclaims the Virgin of Phu Nhai as canonical pattern of the diocese, district or province. It is said, at the journalistic level, that the basilica occupies a prominent position in the Catholic Church in Vietnam and is one of the main Marian temples in the north of the country, which implies a de facto patronage for the faithful of the region.

No official mention has been found of a specific national patronage under the title "Our Lady of the Rosary of Phu Nhai." It should be recalled that, in Vietnam, the advocation recognized as patrona espiritual del país es comúnmente Our Lady of La Vang.

Canonical coronation No reference to a canonical coronation (per pontifical bull) of the Marian image of Phu Nhai. Therefore, according to the sources consulted, does not contain a documented canonical coronation.

Party and devotion

La basílica de Phú Nhai celebra especialmente: – la dedication of the church el 7 December, – la Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception el 8 December, – y las fiestas de Christmas (24 December), all with a great influx of faithful.

There was no explicit mention in the main sources of a particular feast of "Our Lady of the Rosary of Phu Nhai" the 7 October; it can be assumed that, as in most Latin rite parishes, the memory of Our Lady of the Rosary is held liturgical on that date, but no consta that it is the main feast of the sanctuary, nor a solemn one of its own, highlighted in the information available.

La devoción mariana en Phú Nhai es intensa y se expresa en: – multitudes liturgical celebrations en las grandes fiestas marianas y en los aniversarios del templo; – la presencia de many images of the Virgin y de santos, que favorecen formas de piedad popular (procesiones, peregrinaciones, visitas devocionales); – la condición de minor basilicawhich makes it a frequent destination of pilgrimages diocesan and regional.

The local chronicles indicate that in the great solemnities the church and the explanade are filled with faithful of the diocese and other parts of the country, although the sources do not provide concrete figures for assistance.

Link to the Rosary

Despite the name with which it is sometimes designated in devotional areas, the documents consulted on Phu Nhai do not describe a specific and differentiated devotion to the Rosary together with an official advocation "Our Lady of the Rosary of Phu Nhai," they do not expressly mention great concentrations of the Rosary as their own trait identified by the diocese or the Holy See. Therefore, in strict terms of documentation, no consta a special legal-liturgical link of this sanctuary with the advocation of the Rosary, beyond common practice cat
