Origin and history

According to the tradition local, en 1885, during the persecution against Christians linked to the Cħn Vħng movement, the Virgin Mary had intervened in favor of the faithful of the Catholic village of Trà Kiņu, appearing over the church and protecting them from attacks, diverting or inusing the shots directed against them. This memory is preserved as a account of apparitions and of Mary's extraordinary help, transmitted in the community and celebrated in the pilgrimages to the sanctuary.

From the perspective of the documented history, various ecclesial and journalistic sources point out that September 1885 is the origin of the Marian devotion of Trà Kiņu, associated with the acts of anti-Christian persecution in the region and the resistance of the local Catholic community. The place, in the province of Guangnan, within the diocese of Đà Nħng, was consolidated as a Marian sanctuary recognized by the Church in Central Vietnam, and throughout the 20th and 21st century has been the goal of annual pilgrimages and commemorations, including a great Jubilee Marian pilgrimage organized by the diocese.

In recent years, the Church in Vietnam has officially stressed the historical and spiritual importance of Trà Kiņu as one of the country's main centers of Marian devotion, associated with "Marian apparitions and the protection of Mary during an anti-Christian persecution," without entering into dogmatic assessments of the character of the apparitions.

The image and the sanctuary

The available online sources describe Trà Kiğ u above all as a Marian sanctuary built around the church of the old Catholic village, located on a hill and surrounded by a wide pilgrimage in the province of Guangnan, near Đà Nħng. In documents of the Diocese of Đà Nňng and in Catholic press chronicles, the "Santuario de Key tea” o “Marian shrine of Our Lady of Trà Kiņu"as an official place of diocesan and regional pilgrimage. It is not recorded in the consulted sources that the temple has been elevated to minor basilicaor having the formal title of a national sanctuary; rather, it is presented as a Marian sanctuary of the field. diocesan / regional.

As for the imagethe journalistic testimonies and of pilgrims refer to a representation of the Virgin Mary venerated in the sanctuary, but do not provide precise data about the iconographic type, el material or authorship. Some first person descriptions simply mention "the Lady of Tra Kieu" or "the Virgin Mary" in the sanctuary, without specifying whether it is a sculpture or painting, or its style. Therefore, does not consist of documented accuracy the detailed iconographic description (type of dress, posture, symbols) and the material of the main image venerated in Trà Kiğ u in accessible sources.

Sponsorship and coronation

The shrine of Our Lady of Trà Kiņu is presented as a Marian reference place for the OSHO and, in general, for Catholics in the Central Vietnam region. The news of the Jubilee pilgrimages and diocesan celebrations clearly places him within the Marian pastoral of that diocese, which goes there as a sanctuary. No explicit statement has been found in the sources consulted that the name "principal patron" of the diocese, a city or the nation; therefore, does not contain a canonically proclaimed patronage beyond its real importance as a regional devotional centre.

In relation to a possible canonical coronation of the image of Our Lady of Trà Kiņu, the chronicles of Vatican News, Fides and other Catholic media, which detail the history and significance of the sanctuary, do not mention any canonical coronation ceremony approved by the Holy See or by pontifical delegation. Since it would be a fact that is usually highlighted in this type of article, and that it is not cited, it should be concluded that does not contain a documented canonical coronation.

Party and devotion

An annual Marian pilgrimage to the shrine of Trà Kiņu commemorates the protection of Mary during the events of 1885. According to a 2026 chronicle, a great pilgrimage for the 141 years of devotion to Our Lady of Trà Kiņu, in which many faithful and ecclesiastical authorities participated, with Mass, procession and devotional acts. This pilgrimage is presented as a milestone of the Marian regional calendar, although the sources do not accurately indicate the fecha litúrgica exacta of the feast of the advocation; therefore, no consta the date of the main party in the documents consulted.

– Invocación de María bajo el título de Trà Kiệu como in test timesin memory of the persecution of 1885.

The chronicles speak of a "large" influx and the participation of "thousands of faithful" in some pilgrimages, such as the diocesan Marian Jubilee, although exact figures are not always provided. The popular dimension of the feast is manifested in the participation of peasant, religious and secular communities, with Marian songs and processions, reflecting the deep insertion of this devotion into the Catholic identity of Central Vietnam.

Link to the Rosary

The sources consulted on Our Lady of Trà Kiņu they emphasize their character as Marian sanctuary linked to apparitions and community protection in 1885, but do not explicitly mention a specific or own practice of the Rosary prayer associated with this advocation (for example, a fellowship of the particular Rosary or a historical vow to pray the Rosary). Therefore, no consta a unique and documented link with the Rosary beyond ordinary Marian practice that usually accompany pilgrimages.

However, in the Catholic tradition, and especially in contexts of persecution and testing, the Rosary ocupa un lugar central como oración de intercesión y confianza en la protección de la Virgen. – Súplica confiada a la Mother of the Church for peace, reconciliation and fidelity to the Gospel, in continuity with the memory of 1885.

Thus, even if there is no "own" rosarian tradition documented, devotion to Our Lady of Trà Kiņu is naturally harmonized with the practice of the Rosary, which accompanies the pilgrimages and Marian piety of the Vietnamese faithful in this sanctuary.
