The Sacred Heart of Shenyang - The Cathedral of Nanguan
The cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Shenyang, known as the church of Nanguan, was founded in 1875 and is the largest and oldest Catholic church in northeastern China, the seat of the Archdiocese of Shenyang.
🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- Founded in 1875 in Xiaonanmen, it was burned in 1900 during the Boxers rebellion, with hundreds of faithful and priests dead in the persecution.
- It was rebuilt in 1912 in Gothic style by the architect Henri Lamasse, as it is preserved today.
- It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Shenyang, head of the ecclesiastical province of South Manchuria.
- His community, a heir to the 1900 martyrs, keeps the cult alive in one of China's great industrial cities.
