Marian devotion
Our Lady of Kabul, the hidden Marian presence of Afghanistan: for almost a century, the only Catholic chapel in the country was inside the Italian embassy in Kabul, attended by the Barnabite parents, the only place where the rosary was prayed and Mass was held in a country where Christianity is prohibited; the Missionaries of Mother Teresa's Charity also attended children with disabilities. Treat with historical rigor and respect. Latin Catholic Rite.

Origin and history
Documented history
The only recognized Catholic church in Afghanistan was the Chapel of Our Lady of Divine Providence, located within the complex of the Bridada de Italy en Kabul. This presence is part of the Sui iuris mission from Afghanistan, built by Pope John Paul II in 2002, with its seat in that embassy. The temple was authorized in 1933in the context of diplomatic relations between Italy and Afghanistan (started in 1921), and the current building was completed around 1960. Thanks to the diplomatic amparo of the Italian embassy, the chapel survived decades of war and also the first Taliban regime.
The Catholic community was very small and composed almost exclusively of foreigners (diplomatic corps, staff of international, military, religious and religious organizations). Before the current Taliban government, we talk about around 200 Catholics throughout the country, attended by a parish (the embassy chapel) and some pastoral centres linked to religious congregations. The parents (St. Paul's Regular Clérigos) played a central role in pastoral care as responsible for the sui iuris mission and the chaplaincy of the embassy.
En 2021with the Taliban taking Kabul and the subsequent transfer of the Italian embassy to Doha (Catar), the evacuation of the sui iuris mission and of the main Catholic works, which the closure and abandonment of the chapelalong with the rest of the diplomatic complex. Since then, there has no longer been a stable institutional presence of the Catholic Church in Afghanistan.
Tradition and spiritual memory
There is no official Marian advocation under the title "Our Lady of Kabul" in pontifical, liturgical or sui iuris mission documents. The Marian devotion in Kabul has been mainly articulated around the title of Our Lady of Divine Providence, holder of the chapel, and to the consecration of the country to the Immaculate Heart of Mary under the advocation of Our Lady of Fatima, made in 2017 by the chaplain, the barnabe father Giovanni Scalese, in the face of the worsening situation of the country.
In a context where the Christian faith is lived with extreme discretion, some Catholic press testimonies highlight the presence of Mary as a "protection" is silent upon the country and upon those who served there, interpreting this spiritual presence as a sign of hope and peace, especially through the prayer of the Rosary and the consecration to its Immaculate Heart. This reading belongs to the field of spirituality y de la devotional memory, not to a canonical recognition of a specific new Marian advocation.

The image and the sanctuary
The image
The available sources refer to the temple as Chapel of Our Lady of Divine Providencebut do not describe in detail a specific Marian image (type of size, material or iconography specific to the Virgin). It is known that there was in the chapel religious paintings (including an Annunciation, the work of Ulisse Salvini, and other biblical and holy motives), as well as statues of saints and a crucifix on the altar. There is no precise description of a headline image of the Virgin in open sources that can be clearly identified with an icon of "Our Lady of Kabul." Therefore, more than a unique icon, the Marian presence seems to be linked to Patron title of the chapel and the Marian spirituality of the small community.
The sanctuary / temple
The reference place for this Marian presence was:
– Official name: Chapel of Our Lady of Divine Providence (también llamada “Capilla de la embajada de Italia en Kabul”). – Location: within the Embassy of Italy, calle Gran Massoud, barrio de Shash Darak, Kabul. – Rito: Catholic latino (rito romano). – Ecclesiastical jurisdiction: Missio suuris Afghanistan (sui iuris mission from Afghanistan).
The chapel has been described as a small and white building within the embassy complex, about 15 to 20 meters long, with most of the Christian symbols relegated to the interior, due to the legal and cultural restrictions of the Afghan context. It could go unnoticed, except for a small, discreet cross at the entrance.
It is not known that the chapel has been erected as diocesan, national or minor basilica sanctuary. It works in sources like parish and headquarters of the sui iuris mission, with the canonical category of a chapel within a diplomatic representation.

Sponsorship and coronation
Patronage
– Patronazgo local: no consta un decreto formal que nombre a “Nuestra Señora de la Divina Providencia” o a una “Nuestra Señora de Kabul” como patrona oficial de la ciudad o de la misión sui iuris. – Patronazgo nacional: the patron of the country for the Catholic tradition is associated with St. Thomas Apostlewho is said to have preached in the region of Bactriana; this is an ancient tradition, not a dogma or a recent pontifical decree.
In fact, the only clearly documented national action is the consecration of Afghanistan to the Immaculate Heart of Mary under the advocation of Our Lady of Fatima, held in the Kabul chapel in 2017. This consecration has a strong spiritual sense, but does not amount to a legal appointment of canonical patronage.
Canonical coronation
There is no documented canonical coronation of a specific Marian image in Kabul or an image under the title "Our Lady of Divine Providence" or "Our Lady of Kabul" in Afghanistan.
