Bhutan Marian Advocations

Druk Yul, the Thunder Dragon Land

Butane (Pressure Yul, "Thunder Dragon Land") is a Buddhist kingdom of the Himalayas with some 790,000 inhabitants. Christianity is a minority (less than 0.5%, about 4,000 Catholics estimated). There is no formal Catholic diocese in the country; pastoral care depends on the Diocese of Darjeeling (India). Religious freedom is restricted: proselytism is illegal and Christian celebrations are conducted with discretion. The Catholic Church is present through lay missionaries and priests who visit from India. There are no official Catholic churches; the faithful gather in private houses. Marian devotion is practiced in private. The Salesians have had a missionary presence since 1997.

Background and history

Population: ~790.000
Estimated Catholics: ~4.000 (<0,5%)
Jurisdiction: Diócesis de Darjeeling (India)
Salesian presence: Since 1997

Bhutan is one of the most closed countries in the world for Christianity. The 2008 Constitution guarantees religious freedom, but in practice the Government restricts the activities of any religion other than Buddhism. Proselytism is punishable by law, and Christian meetings must be held in private. There is no Catholic church with its own registered building in the country. The Catholic community, mostly composed of Bhutanese converts and Indian immigrant workers, meets in private homes for the celebration of the Mass, which officiate priests who cross the border from India. Despite the difficulties, the Catholic faith grows discreetly, and the figure of Mary occupies a central place in the piety of these faithful who live their faith in the shadow.

The Salesians of Don Bosco, present in Bhutan since 1997, have been active in an educational and social work that has been key to the Catholic community. He was precisely a Salesian, the P. Kinley Tshering, the first Bhutanese priest in history. Its ordination in 2015 was a milestone for the Church in the country.

Anécdotas de fe

El misionero salesiano P. Kinley Tshering

Place: Butane · Year: 2015

Father Kinley Tshering is the first Catholic priest born in Bhutan. His family became Catholicism when he was a child, an act of great courage in a country where change of religion brings social and family pressure. He studied at the seminary in India and was ordered in 2015 by the Diocese of Darjeeling. His vocation, nurtured by the example of the Salesian missionaries, is a living testimony that the Catholic faith grows even in the most adverse places.

"Lord, bless Father Kinley and all the priests who serve on mission lands.

The Catholic Community

Place: Bhutan (all country)

For decades, the Bhutanese Catholics celebrated Mass in private houses, with the curtains closed and in complete silence, so as not to draw the attention of the authorities or the neighbours. The priests arrived from India with tourist documents and celebrated the Eucharist at night or at night. Only in recent years, with some openness, has the community begun to meet with more freedom, but always with caution.

) Virgin Mary, protect Christians who live their faith in discretion and silence.

Masses in the Timbu garage

Place: And Timbah, and Bután,

In the capital, Timbu, the Catholic community met for a long time in a rented garage for Sunday Mass. The faithful came from one to one, at different times, not to raise suspicion. They called the door with a special code: two blows, pause, one blow. When they entered, they sat on folding chairs and the Mass was held in a low voice. It was the domestic, living and hidden Church, like that of the first Christians.

- Mary, Mother of the domestic Church, pray for the communities that meet in secret.

The Virgin of Bhutan: natural inculturation

Place: Butane

Some Bhutanese Catholics venerate Mary as "the Mother of Compassion," using symbols and images that harmonize with local culture. Instead of the European classical representations, they are inclined by icons that show Mary with hymalay features, surrounded by natural elements such as the thunder dragon or lotus, a sacred flower in Buddhism. It is a natural and respectful inculturation that brings Mary's figure to the Bhutanese heart without losing Christian orthodoxy.

"Mother of Compassion, teach us to see Mary with the eyes of each culture.

Visit of Fr. Kinley to Santa María la Mayor

Place: Rome, Italy · Year: 2022

In 2022, Father Kinley Tshering travelled to Rome for a meeting of Salesian missionaries. When he visited the Basilica of Santa Maria la Mayor, one of the four largest basilicas of Christianity, he was excited to see the image of Mary. "In Bhutan we have no churches like this," she confessed, "but Mary is in every Catholic home, in every heart that loves her." His tears spoke of the simple and deep faith of a Church without temples but with the living temple of love for the Virgin.

"Virgin Mary, you who are the Mother of all, welcome your children from Bhutan.

Virgin of Bhutan

Place: Bhutan (National) · Type: Unofficial popular return

The "Virgin of Bhutan" is an advocation of a national character, not officially recognized by the Church, which Bhutanese Catholics use to refer to the maternal protection of Mary over the country. There is no concrete image or sanctuary; it is a spontaneous devotion that arises from the need to feel Mary as a compatriot and protector in a country where being a Christian implies an extra dose of faith and courage.

"Our Lady of Bhutan, protect your children in the Thunder Dragon Land.

Our Lady of Compassion

Place: Butane · Type: Adaptación cultural

Under the title "Mother of Compassion," some Bhutanese Catholics venerate Mary with visual elements taken from local culture. It is an expression of inculturated faith that seeks to build bridges between the Christian message and the Buddhist sensibility of the country, where compassion (karuna) is a central virtue. Devotion is lived in the domestic sphere.

"Mother of Compassion, teach us to love as Mary loves."

Maria Auxiliadora

Place: Butane · Party: 24 May · Type: Salesian return

The devotion to Mary Helper came to Bhutan from the hands of the Salesian missionaries present in the country since 1997. Don Bosco promoted this advocation as the help of Christians, and the Salesians took it to all corners of the world where they exercise their mission. In Bhutan, Mary Helper is a symbol of hope and strength for a community that needs divine help to persevere in faith.

In addition, please pray for the missionaries and for the Church in Bhutan.

Immaculate Heart of Mary

Place: Butane · Party: Saturday following the Sacred Heart · Type: Private return

The devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, promoted by the apparitions of Fatima, is probably the most widespread among Bhutanese Catholics. His intimate character and focused on Mary's silent love connects with a spirituality that, in Bhutan, must live doors inside. The consecration to the Immaculate Heart is practised in Catholic homes as an act of protection and subsidiary trust.

"Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the time of our death.

Our Lady of the Rosary

Place: Butane · Party: 7 October · Type: Community return

The prayer of the Rosary is the central Marian practice in the home meetings of the Bhutanese Catholics. Without churches or chapels, the faithful gather in the houses and, before or after the domestic mass, pray the Rosary in a low voice. Each mystery is an opportunity to meditate on the life of Christ and to feel the company of Mary. Some groups have adopted the custom of lighting a single candle during the prayer, symbol of Christ light in the midst of darkness.

"Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for the unity of Christians in Bhutan.

A prayer for Bhutan

A flower for the Virgin

Mary, Mother of Compassion, you who know the heart of every culture and every people, protect your children from Bhutan. It strengthens those who live their faith in discretion and silence.
