Marian Advocations of Equatorial Guinea

In Equatorial Guinea, of old Spanish missionary roots, the Marian faith is lived with intensity: the Virgin of Bisila reigns as patron of Bioko and, on the coast, the sea itself becomes the altar of the Virgin of Carmen.

- Marvel and Marian anecdotes of Equatorial Guinea

  • Our Lady of Bisila, patron of the island of Bioko, is represented in white and blue wearing the Child Jesus on her back, according to African tradition.
  • On the continental coast the Virgin of Carmen is celebrated with a maritime procession: a boat carries its image by the sea, accompanied by the faithful between songs and prayers, as a sign of amparo for fishermen.

History of Marian devotion in Equatorial Guinea

The devotion to the Virgin Mary in Equatorial Guinea, although a minority in a country of Muslim majority or traditional African religions, has a significant presence among local Christian communities. Christianity has come to these lands through European missionaries since the 15th century (Portuguese, French, Spanish), and the figure of Mary was one of the pillars of evangelization. Marian apparitions in Africa, like Kibeho's in Rwanda (1981- 1989), have boosted Marian devotion throughout the continent.

In Equatorial Guinea, the Virgin is venerated under various calls, many of them introduced by the missionaries: the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Lourdes. The local Catholic communities keep the devotion to Mary alive through the prayer of the Rosary, processions and patronal parties, which are expressions of an incarnate faith in African culture.

The basilica of the Immaculate Conception of Mongomo, built between 2011 and 2015, is the largest church in Central Africa. The sanctuary of Our Lady of the Pilar in Bata, the parish of Our Lady of Fatima in Evinayong and the sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary in Ebebiyin are important centers of Marian devotion. The patron parties in honor of the Virgin Mary are held with traditional processions, songs and dances that reflect the rich culture of the fang, bubi and ndowé peoples.
