History of Marian devotion in Malawi
The devotion to the Virgin Mary in Malawi, although a minority in a country of Muslim majority or traditional African religions, has a significant presence among local Christian communities. Christianity has come to these lands through European missionaries since the 15th century (Portuguese, French, Spanish), and the figure of Mary was one of the pillars of evangelization. Marian apparitions in Africa, like Kibeho's in Rwanda (1981- 1989), have boosted Marian devotion throughout the continent.
In Malawi, the Virgin is venerated under various advocacy, many of them introduced by the missionaries: the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Lourdes. The local Catholic communities keep the devotion to Mary alive through the prayer of the Rosary, processions and patronal parties, which are expressions of an incarnate faith in African culture.
The Catholic Church in Malawi has two archdioceses and six dioceses. Marian devotion flourishes in May with the prayer of the community Rosary. In the Shrine of Likuni and in the Cathedral of Lilongwe, the Virgin is invoked as Mother of the Poor and protector of families.

Our Lady of the Rosary of Likuni, venerated in the missionary sanctuary of Likuni, near Lilongwe
The Likuni shrine, founded by the Consolata missionaries at the beginning of the 20th century, is one of the oldest Marian centers in Malawi. Thousands of faithful come every October for the pilgrimage of the Rosary, with traditional Malauis songs and dances. The sanctuary also houses a catechetic training centre.

Immaculate Heart of Mary of Mzuzu, patron of the diocese of Mzuzu
The cathedral of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Mzuzu, in northern Malawi, is the spiritual center of the diocese. The Irish missionaries introduced this devotion, which is especially lived in the families with the daily prayer of the Rosary and the consecration of the home.

The Catholic mission of Mangochi, on the banks of Lake Malawi, was founded by the White Fathers. Every 1 January a boat procession is held on the lake in honor of Saint Mary the Mother of God, one of the most unique manifestations of faith in the country.
