Marian devotions in Myanmar
Burma, the land of pagodas and Maria's love
Myanmar (formerly Burma) is home to a Catholic community of approximately 1.2 million faithful, around 2.2% of the population. Catholicism arrived with Italian Barnabite missionaries and missionaries from the Paris Foreign Missions Society (MEP) in the 19th century. Today, it has 16 dioceses and a deeply rooted Marian devotion among the Karen, Chin, and Kachin ethnic groups. Despite decades of military dictatorship and civil war, the Church remains a pillar of hope and reconciliation.

Marian history of Myanmar
Devotion to the Virgin Mary arrived in Burma with the Italian Barnabite missionaries, who established the first missions in the Yangon region in the mid-19th century. They were followed by the Paris Foreign Missions (MEP) priests, who evangelized the interior and northern mountains. The Christian faith took root especially among the Karen, Chin, and Kachin ethnic minorities, peoples who have suffered constant persecution at the hands of Burmese military regimes.
The Virgin Mary is for Burmese Catholics a symbol of peaceful resistance and comfort in the midst of suffering. During the civil war that has taken the country since independence in 1948, and especially after the coup d & apos; état of 2021, Catholic communities have gathered around the Rosary to call for peace. The Catholic Church in Myanmar is one of the few institutions that enjoy the confidence of all ethnic groups for their educational, health and humanitarian work.
Roses and tears: Marian anecdotics from Myanmar
- The Yangon Cathedral survived the war. The Cathedral of Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Yangon, built in 1895 in a neo-Gothic style with its impressive Marian windows, was the only large building in the centre of Yangon that remained intact after the bombing of World War II. The city was destroyed, but the cathedral remained standing as a sign of Mary's protection.
- Our Lady of Nyaunglebin, sanctuary of peace. In the village of Nyaunglebin, an image of Our Lady of Lourdes is the center of the only National Sanctuary of Myanmar. During the civil war, pilgrims of all ethnic groups - karen, shan, bamar, chin - go together to pray for peace, leaving their differences at the feet of the Virgin.
- The Virgin of the Karen. The Karen ethnic group, which suffers one of the longest civil wars in the world, has a special devotion to the Virgin of Fatima. The elders count that Mary cries for her persecuted children. In the mountains of Karenni, catechists teach the Rosary to children as their only inheritance.
- Cardinal Charles Bo consecrates Myanmar to Mary. The first Burmese Cardinal, Charles Maung Bo (created by Pope Francis in 2015), has been a tireless voice for peace. On December 8, 2021, following the military coup, I solemnly consecrate Myanmar to the Virgin Mary asking her intercession to stop the violence.
- The martyrs of the Rosary. During the clashes between the Burmese army (Tatmadaw) and armed ethnic groups, dozens of catechists, priests and religious have been killed. According to the testimonies, many of them prayed the Rosary at the time of their death. The Burmese Church venerates them as witnesses to the faith.
Marian devotions in Myanmar
Myanmar is home to a variety of Marian devotions, from the grand cathedrals in the cities to the rural chapels in the Chin and Kachin mountains. These are the main ones:
Our Lady of the Rosary of Yangon
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary is the most important Catholic cathedral in Myanmar. Built in a neo-Gothic style by the Italian Barnabite missionaries, it is an architectural jewel with glass windows that represent the mysteries of the Rosary. It was the only large structure in the centre of Yangon that survived intact World War II. It is the seat of the Archidiocesis of Yangon and the heart of the Burmese Catholic Church.

Our Lady of Lourdes of Nyaunglebin
The National Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes of Nyaunglebin is the only national sanctuary in Myanmar. Built in a rural environment, it houses an image of the Virgin of Lourdes that attracts pilgrims from all the ethnic groups of the country. It is a place of reconciliation where karen, bamar, shan and chin pray together for peace. During the civil war, the sanctuary has been a shelter for internally displaced persons.

Our Lady of Fatima of Mandalay
In the old royal city of Mandalay, devotion to Our Lady of Fatima congregates Burmese faithful from all backgrounds. Especially loved by the Karen community, which has made this advocation its flag of faith in the midst of persecution. Every 13 May, thousands of pilgrims go through the streets of Mandalay in procession.

Immaculate Conception of Myitkyina
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of Myitkyina is the seat of the Diocesis of Myitkyina, in the state of Kachin, one of the most conflict areas of the country. The Christian kachin have a deep devotion to the Virgin Mary. The cathedral has witnessed decades of civil war between the Burmese army and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA).

Our Lady of the Perpetual Help of Yangon
Devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help arrived in Yangon with the Redemptorist missionaries. It is one of the most beloved Marian devotions among the Burmese Catholic community, especially among the faithful of the Archdiocese of Yangon. The image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is carried in procession through the city streets every year.

Our Lady of Lourdes of Yangon
The Catholic community of Yangon has a parish dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, where the faithful come to pray for the sick and needy. It is a local pilgrimage center where the grotto of Massabielle is recreated, complete with holy water and candles.

Immaculate Conception of Mandalay
The second city of the country welcomes a particular devotion to the Immaculate Conception, with a church dedicated in the heart of Mandalay. It is a meeting point for the local Catholic community and a centre for catechesis and training for young people.
