History of Marian devotion in Namibia
The devotion to the Virgin Mary in Namibia, although a minority in a country of Muslim majority or traditional African religions, has a significant presence among local Christian communities. Christianity has come to these lands through European missionaries since the 15th century (Portuguese, French, Spanish), and the figure of Mary was one of the pillars of evangelization. Marian apparitions in Africa, like Kibeho's in Rwanda (1981- 1989), have boosted Marian devotion throughout the continent.
In Namibia, the Virgin is venerated under various advocacy, many of them introduced by the missionaries: the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Lourdes. The local Catholic communities keep the devotion to Mary alive through the prayer of the Rosary, processions and patronal parties, which are expressions of an incarnate faith in African culture.

Maria Auxiliadora, Mother of the unity of Namibia
Namibia, one of the youngest countries in Africa (independent since 1990), has a vibrant Catholic Church that accounts for about 20 per cent of the population. Catholic evangelization began with the Oblate missionaries of Mary Immaculate (IMO) at the end of the 19th century, who established missions between the ovambo, Hero and Nama peoples. The Virgin Mary, under the title of Mary Helper, was declared patron of Namibia, and her cathedral in Windhoek is the spiritual center of the country. Devotion to Mary Helper has a special meaning for Namibia, as it was invoked during the years of the struggle for independence and subsequent reconciliation.
The Cathedral of Santa María (Mary Auxiliadora) of Windhoek, built between 1906 and 1908 by German missionaries, is a neo-Gothic-style building with an imposing 35-metre tower that dominates the center of the capital. Its interior houses a large white marble altar with an image of Maria Auxiliadora carved in olive wood. The feast of Mary Auxiliadora (May 24) is one of the most important celebrations in the country, and brings together thousands of faithful from all regions. The archdiocese of Windhoek organizes a ninth annual preparation, with preaching in several languages (English, German, Afrikans, oshiwambo, Hero), reflecting the cultural diversity of the Namibian Church.
Immaculate Conception of Ondangwa
In Ondangwa, in the northern region of Namibia where the majority of the country's Catholic population is concentrated, the parish of the Immaculate Conception is an important Marian centre. The church, built in 1938 by the Oblate missionaries of Mary Immaculate, is a missionary-style building with adobe walls and a straw roof. The image of the Immaculate Conception, a wood size carved by ovambo artisans, represents the Virgin with African features, standing on a snake, according to traditional iconography. Every December 8, the ovambo Catholic community celebrates the patron party with traditional dances, polyphonic songs and the traditional community-shared millet beer (oshikundu).

Our Lady of the Rosary of Swakopmund
In the picturesque coastal town of Swakopmund, of German heritage, the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary is a beautiful building of neo-Gothic style built in 1912 by German missionaries. The church, known locally as "Rosenkranzkirche," features a sandstone façade with a roseton that represents the mysteries of the Rosary. Inside, an altar carved in mahogany wood shows the Virgin of the Rosary with the Child Jesus. The Catholic community of Swakopmund, though small, maintains the German tradition of "Maiandacht" (May devotion) with the prayer of the Rosary and Marian songs in German and English every afternoon of May.

The archdiocese of Windhoek organizes a Marian pilgrimage every year to the shrine of Mary Auxiliary in the mission of Okahandja, 70 kilometres from the capital. This pilgrimage, which takes place on the first Saturday of May, attracts faithful from all regions of Namibia, including the members of the Lutheran Church who also venerate Mary. The pilgrimage includes the prayer of the Rosary in four languages and a Mass concelebrated by the Archbishop. The image of Mary Auxiliadora, brought from Germany in 1906, is venerated as a protector of travellers and missionaries who travel the vast distances of Namibia.
The archdiocese of Windhoek has established the "Namibian Marian Year" in 2024- 2025 to commemorate the 120 years of the arrival of the first Oblate missionaries of Mary Immaculate to Namibia. During this year, the pilgrim image of Mary Auxiliadora is visiting all the parishes of the country, from the border with Angola to the Orange River. The pilgrimage will end with the consecration of Namibia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Windhoek Cathedral. This initiative has brought Namibian Catholics around their patron, strengthening the Catholic identity in a country where the majority of the population is Lutheran.
