Despite its Protestant history, the Netherlands retains a living Marian devotion in the southern Catholic and in great shrines of pilgrimage. History of Marian devotion in the Netherlands
The Netherlands, despite its image of a largely Protestant country, has an ancient and rich Marian Catholic tradition, especially concentrated in the southern provinces (Limburg, Northern Brabant). The Heiloo Sanctuary, since the 15th century, is the oldest Marian pilgrimage centre in the country. The Lady of All Peoples in Amsterdam is a modern advocation of the 20th century.
The Virgin of Bolduque (Den Bosch), the Virgin in t Zand of Roermond, the Star of the Sea of Maastricht and the Virgin of the Sacred Heart of Sittard are testimonies of a Marian faith that has lived through the centuries in the Dutch Catholic territories. The country has a dense network of local Marian shrines that reflect the particular history of each region.
