The Assumption, patron of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, a small island country in the Eastern Caribbean, has a Catholic community that accounts for about 7 per cent of the population. The diocese of Kingstown, built in 1989, covers the whole country and is based in the Cathedral of the Assumption of Kingstown. Catholic evangelization began with the French missionaries in the 18th century, when the island was disputed between France and England. The devotion to Our Lady of the Assumption, patron of the diocese, was introduced by French settlers, and her feast on August 15 is the country's most important Catholic celebration. The cathedral, built in 1820 and rebuilt in 1910 after a hurricane, is a neo-Gothic Caribbean building with coral and wood walls.

The Catholic community of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, although small, is diverse and active. In addition to Kingstown Cathedral, there are parishes on the main islands of the country, such as Bequia, Canouan and Union Island. Marian devotion is expressed through the prayer of the Rosary, the processions of May and the patron parties of each parish. The Episcopal Conference of the Antilles, to which the diocese belongs, has promoted devotion to Our Lady of the Assumption as a sign of hope and unity for the Vincentian people, who have faced challenges such as hurricanes and economic difficulties.

The image of Our Lady of Perpetual Relief, a reproduction of the Byzantine icon donated by the Church of Trinidad and Tobago, is especially venerated by fishermen and their families. Every 27 June, the patron party is celebrated with a maritime procession in which the image of the Virgin is carried on a boat decorated around the Bay of Admiral.

The chapel was built in 1968 by the fishermen of the island, using limestone and sea shells. The image of Our Lady of Lourdes, a small size of wood brought from France, was donated by a family of Martinian origin. Every February 11, Canouan Catholics gather for the celebration of the Virgin of Lourdes, followed by a procession on the beach and the blessing of the fishing boats, in a tradition that unites Marian faith with the daily life of the islanders.

"Our Lady of Lourdes of Canouan, pray for us.

Our Lady of Carmen of Union Island

In Union Island, the southernmost of the Grenadines, the chapel of Our Lady of Carmen in Clifton is the center of the island's Catholic community. The chapel was built in 1968 by the local community with coralina stone and cedar wood. The image of Our Lady of Carmen, a size of wood brought from Trinidad, shows the Virgin with the scapular in her hand. The Catholic community of Union Island, composed mainly of fishermen and their families, celebrates the feast of July 16 with a maritime procession around the island, in which the image of the Virgin is carried on a boat decorated with flowers and flags.

"Our Lady of the Carmen of Union Island, pray for us.

The history of the Catholic Church in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is closely linked to the work of the Sisters of Mercy, who arrived on the island in 1859 and established schools and hospitals. The devotion to Our Lady of the Assumption was especially promoted by the Franciscan missionaries who served in the diocese since its foundation. The Cathedral of Kingstown, built in 1820, has witnessed the history of the country: from the struggle for independence to the recovery after hurricanes. The image of the Assumption, a size of wood brought from France, was crowned canonically in 1989 on the occasion of the erection of the diocese.

The diocese of Kingstown has developed a program of "Mariana Missions" in which the pilgrim image of Our Lady of the Assumption visits each of the parishes of the islands, bringing Mary's blessing to the vicentine homes. This programme, launched in 1995, has strengthened the unity of the Catholic community scattered across the country's many islands. The pilgrim image is received with songs, prayers and floral offerings in each community, and its visit is an event that mobilizes the entire population, including non-Catholics who also venerate the Mother of Jesus.
