History of Marian devotion in Ukraine

Ukraine, the cradle of Eastern Slavic Christianity, has an ancient veneration to the Virgin Mary, expressed through the Byzantine Marian icons. The Pochaiv Sanctuary in Volinia is the most important Marian center of Ukrainian orthodoxy, a goal of constant pilgrimage. Berdychiv is the main Latin Catholic sanctuary. Hrushiv, Hoshiv and Zarvanytsia are centers of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church.

The Virgin of Kyiv-Pechersk (Kyiv de las Caves) is one of the oldest advocations, linked to the monastery of the Caves founded in the 11th century. Ukrainian Marian icons are characterized by their Byzantine-Slavic style, with the Virgin holding the Child in a position of deep tenderness (Umillennie). Ukraine is called "house of Mary" by the Eastern tradition.
