Marian devotion
Our Lady of Altötting
The Black Virgin of Bavaria
In the heart of Bavaria, a small image darkened by time is venerated as Mother and Queen of the Bavarians. His chapel is surrounded by exvotes that count centuries of graces.

Origin and history
The Marian devotion in Altötting dates back to the Middle Ages, but the rise of the sanctuary is linked to a miracle of 1489: a drowned child was brought before the image of the Virgin and, after the pleas of her family, regained life. From then on, the graces and exvotes were multiplied, consolidating Altötting as one of the great Marian centers of the German world.
The current image is a small size of wood, darkened by the time and smoke of the candles, from which comes the title "Black Virgin of Altötting." The chapel is surrounded by galleries with hundreds of thank-you plates. St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI - Bavarian - pilgrimaged to the sanctuary.
