Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Rosary of Andecollo
The Virgin of the mining people of Chile
In the North Chico of Chile, the Virgin of Andacollo has been venerated since colonial times by the miners. His title joins the Rosary, and his December "Great Party" is filled with dances and promises.
Origin and history
According to tradition, the image was found on the hills of the area in the early times of colonization. His veneration was consolidated among the miners and inhabitants, who saw in it special protection against the dangers of work in the mines. The name "Andacollo" is related to an indigenous voice, and devotion expresses the inculturation of the Marian faith between the original peoples and the mining world.
In time the sanctuary was raised, today one of Chile's main pilgrimage centres, especially in the north. Every year, the December "Great Party" brings together thousands of pilgrims with processions, religious dances (promise dances) and celebrations for several days. His official title, "of the Rosary," reflects the preaching of this devotion for missionaries in the region.
