Why this page exists apart
Because in August 1917 three things happened at the same time that disclosure often mixed, miscounted or adorned:
1. The three children were held by civil authority on August 13 and could not be in the Cova da Iria.
2. The apparition occurred days after and elsewhere: en Valinhos.
3. The episode of boiling oil - the most repeated of all - It's not where most people think it is..
And there is also a date correction in which the official edition itself contradicts Sister Lucia.
Quién was the administrator of Ourém
Artur de Oliveira Santos, admin del designo de Vila Nova de Ourém, born 22 January 1884. This data is recorded in the biographical note of the critical edition of the Sanctuary (Critical Documentation of Fatima. Selection, p. 22).
What is documented of his fist and handwriting is his declared hostility to the Fatima phenomenon and his anti-lerical Republican militancy. In a trade of yours addressed to the Portuguese Federation of Free Thought of June 5, 1920, writes:
— DCF. Selection, doc. 56, pp. 212-215. Own translation.
On August 13, there was no apparition in the Cova
The parish priest of Fatima himself, P. Manuel Marques FerreiraHe led his notation with an eloquent dryness: "5th Apparition - They were arrested» (DCF. Selection, doc. 5, pp. 36-37).
That day was estimated to be between 5,000 and 6,000 persons waiting in the Cova da Iria - the figure is from the parish priest himself, who gives it "second to the calculations" in his public letter of August 1917.
The charge against the priest, and his defence in writing
Rumor spread that the parish priest had been accomplice from the abduction. It was publicly defended in the newspaper O Ouriense del August 25, 1917:
The Administrator didn't trust me with the secret of his intentions.»
— DCF. Selection, doc. 6, pp. 37-40. Own translation.
The edition notes that equivalent letters were published in The Messenger (Leiria, 22-VIII@-@ 1917) and The Order (Lisboa, 25-VIII-1917).
Years later, the 7 December 1929the same priest wrote to Dr. Galamba de Oliveira listing the persecutions suffered and referring, for the kidnapping, to his 1917 report:
— DCF. Selection, doc. 110, pp. 399-401.
Threats: exactly what sources say
This is the most useful correction of this page, and we give it with all its pieces.
In the Memories, what Sister Lucia writes is the threat of freír, not to mention oil:
- I report, Memories, p. 51. Own translation.
The explicit mention of boiling oil is in another document and is later: la to the diocesan Canon Commission of 8 July 1924, literally cited by the official study of the Sanctuary:
- Declaration of 8 July 1924, Critical Documentation of Fatima 2, doc. 8, pp. 142-143, cited in: * * CRISTINO, Luciano, Fourth apparition of Our Lady in the Valinhos on August 19, 1917, Fatima, Shrine of Fatima, 2014, pp. 49-60 — PDF oficial:
https://www.fatima.pt/files/upload/estudos/E003_Quarta%20aparicao%20de%20Nossa%20Senhora.pdf (HTTP 200).Honest conclusion: the boiling oil episode is of canon source and is documentedbut It's not in the Memories.: is in the 1924 declaration. Those who quote it "according to the Memories of Sr Lucia" are quoting it wrong.
And a precaution of method that should be imitated: Official chronology of the Sanctuary use the formula "to believe in the account of Lucia, several threats to reveal the secret. "The Sanctuary itself distinguishes the account of certainty.
The apparition of Valinhos
Date: August 19, 1917. Place: Valinhosnear Aljustrel, where the children fed the flock.
— I want you to continue to go to the Cova da Iria on the 13th, to continue to pray the rosary every day. In the last month I'll do the miracle for everyone to believe.
[…]
- What do you want to be done with the money people leave in the Cova da Iria?
— Do two walks: you take it with Jacinta and two other girls, dressed in white; the other takes it Francis with three boys. The money of the walk is for the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary and what over is for the help of a chapel to be ordered to do.
- I'd like to ask you to heal some sick people.
— Yeah, some of them will be cured during the year.
And taking a sadder look:
— Pray, pray much and make sacrifices for sinners, who go many souls to hell for there is no one to sacrifice and ask for them.»
— IV Memoria, pp. 178-179**. Own translation.
And the interrogation of the parish priest of August 27, 1917 It collects, in hot, what was lost by the kidnapping:
— DCF, vol. I, p. 17. Selection, p. 36 (interrogation of 21 August).
(«La Aldea» es Village of the Cross, former name of Vila Nova de Ourém, according to the edition itself.)
Date: August 19, no 15. And the editor says it against the seer.
This is one of the six points where Fatima's current story is wrong, and the case is instructive because who corrects Sister Lucia is his own official edition.
Sister Lucia writes in the Second Report that the apparition was the August 15. Note 21 of the official edition responds:
— note 21 to II Memory, Memories of Sister Lucia I. Own translation.
The documentary basis of the correction It's two things:
1. El of the parish priest of 21 August 1917, written two days after the fact: "Lucia said that she saw Our Lady on the Sunday following the 13th on the site of the Valinho "(DCF. Selection, doc. 5, p. 36).
2. The statements of Manuel Pedro Marto, Olímpia de Jesus, Maria Rosa and Maria dos Santos to the Commission 28 September 1923, dated August 19 (official study E003 of the Shrine, HTTP 200).
The administrative machinery, documented
The harassment was not an outburst of an official. There's paper:
| Date | Document | Content |
|---|---|---|
| 7-V-1920 | Telegram of civilian governor of Santarém to the administrator (DCF. Selection, doc. 55, p. 211) | Order to prevent the commemoration of 13 May |
| 5-VI-1920 | Office of Artur de Oliveira Santos a la Federation of Free Thought (doc. 56, pp. 212-215) | The text cited above |
| 8-X-1923 | Office of civilian governor (doc. 81, p. 314) | "Getting ready for next day 13 of the current a manifestation of a reactionary character, under the pretext of religious veneration in the place of Fatima, I come to ask V. E. to [...] the right to prohibit any procession or…» |
Fatima was born, therefore, in the midst of documented official hostilityin the First Portuguese Republic. That is the historical context, and it is tested with documents from the State apparatus itself.
