Our Lady of Sorrows, also known as Our Lady of the Volcanoes, is the patron saint of Lanzarote. On July 31, 1824, a volcano erupted between Tao and Tinajo; the locals held a procession imploring the Virgin not to abandon their land, and moments later the volcano ceased erupting. Because of this miracle, she was proclaimed Our Lady of the Volcanoes.

The image and the sanctuary

He is venerated in his hermitage in Mancha Blanca (Tinajo), at the gates of the Fire Mountains of Timanfaya.

Her image is carried in procession on September 15th and July 31st, the anniversary of the miracle of the volcanoes. Devotion to her is a defining characteristic of the island.
