Our Lady of Vallivana (Mare de Déu de Vallivana)

Marian Invocation of Morella (Valencia Community)

The Jacobea tradition states that the image would be a gift from the Apostle James, who, coming to evangelize Spain, would have landed in the Alfaques and, before going to Valencia, would have passed through the area of Morella (the ancient Bisgargis), where he knocked down a pagan temple dedicated to Jupiter and Diana in the ravine of Vallivana, leaving there the image of the Virgin as a memory of his mission. Another traditional line tells a miraculous finding: after the Christian conquest of Morella by Blasco de Alagon (1232-1233), a pastor would have found the image in a cave in the Vallivana ravine, guided by the barks of his dog and an extraordinary light, where the image would have remained hidden since the arrival of the Muslims to free it from destruction. These narrations come from ancient local chronicles and are transmitted as a pious tradition, not as historically proven facts.

Origin and history

The image and the sanctuary

The image is venerated in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Vallivana, located about 22 km from Morella, next to the current N-232, in the area of Vallivana (province of Castellón, area of the diocese of Segorbe- Castellón). The image is a size of about 29 cm, Gothic style, dating back to the late 14th or early 15th century.

Sponsorship and coronation

He is a canonical patron of the city of Morella, proclaimed as such in 1952, during the Sexenium of that year. It was canonically crowned on August 28, 1910, in the context of the 1910 Sexenium.

Party and devotion
