La Hodegetria («la que muestra el camino») fue el icono mariano más célebre de Constantinopla, venerado en el monasterio de los Hodegoi. La tradición bizantina atribuía su factura al evangelista san Lucas, atribución que pertenece a la leyenda piadosa y no a la historia documentada. El icono se convirtió en paladión de la ciudad y modelo iconográfico difundido por todo el mundo cristiano. El original se perdió, según las fuentes, en torno a la caída de Constantinopla en 1453.

The image and the sanctuary

She represents Mary holding the Child on the left arm and pointing it with her right hand, indicating Christ as a way of salvation. The Hodegoi shrine, where it was preserved and processed, disappeared; there is no place of worship that can be identified today in Istanbul. From this model derive countless later Eastern Marian icons.

Sponsorship and coronation

The Hodegetria was considered a protector of Constantinople. There is no canonical coronation in the Latin mode.

Party and devotion

There is no current party linked to the lost original. His devotion continues above all through the iconographic type, reproduced and venerated in the Eastern Churches to this day.

The gesture of the Hodegetria - Mary who points to her Son - sums up the purpose of the Rosary: through the Mother, to contemplate and follow Christ. It is one of the images that best express the Marian mediation that the Rosary puts into practice.
