History of Marian devotion in Wallis and Futuna

Christianity reached the islands of Wallis and Futuna in the hands of missionaries in the 19th and 20th centuries. The devotion to the Virgin Mary, introduced by the evangelizers, was rooted in the local Christian communities, which found in Mary a maternal figure close to their own culture.

The Marian advocates present in Wallis and Futuna reflect the diversity of missionary traditions: the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Lourdes. The small Catholic communities keep the devotion to Mary alive through the prayer of the Rosary and the celebration of the Marian parties.

The diocese of Wallis and Futuna has as its patron Our Lady of the Assumption, whose solemnity on August 15 is the most important feast in the territory. Every year, the faithful of the three islands - Uvea (Wallis), Futuna and Alofi - meet to celebrate the Assumption with processions in which all peoples participate. The Cathedral of Our Lady of Asunción in Mata- Utu, with its imposing architecture, is the spiritual heart of Wallis. In Futuna, the sanctuary of Poi, where St Peter Chanel died, is a Marian pilgrimage center where the faithful pray the Rosary asking for the intercession of the martyr and the Virgin.
