Not all shrines are born from an apparition or a renowned miracle. Some grow simply from a people's desire to have a place to draw closer to the Mother. Such is the case of the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, Illinois, built by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate starting in the 1950s, in the heart of the American Midwest.

The title itself reveals its origin: Our Lady of the Snows is the title of the ancient Roman Marian devotion linked to the miracle of the snowfall on August 5th on the Esquiline Hill. Belleville adopts this same name and feast day, without claiming any local apparition. It is, quite clearly, a sanctuary of devotion, not of revelation, and this should be stated from the outset to avoid confusing tradition with established fact.

Aquí la fe no se cuenta en un prodigio único, sino en miles de exvotos y de gracias pequeñas.

What distinguishes Belleville is not a grand chronicle of miracles, but the quiet sum of countless personal testimonies: healings, conversions, family reconciliations, gathered over the years in the sanctuary itself. These are graces attested to as pilgrims' accounts and votive offerings, not as canonically investigated miracles; and it is precisely in this humility that its beauty lies. Among its gardens and open-air biblical stations, thousands of families find a place to pray.

There's a tradition that has transcended the religious to become a regional event: the "Way of Lights," the path of lights that transforms the sanctuary into an illuminated walkway every Advent and Christmas. It's not a miracle, but a luminous and heartwarming way to publicly express Marian devotion, and it draws crowds of families from southern Illinois and the St. Louis area every year.

The Rosary is deeply integrated into the life of the place: Marian processions and vigils in May and October, around August 5th and 15th, and prayer programs promoted by the Oblates. There is no mandate here regarding the Rosary as in Fatima, but rather a serene invitation to pray it for peace, for families, and for the needs of the world, according to the Marian spirituality of the Oblates.
