Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary

Above the city of Braga, on Mount Sameiro, at an altitude of approximately 566 meters, stands Portugal's second Marian shrine, after Fatima. It is the Basilica of Our Lady of Sameiro, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, visible from the city and the destination of major diocesan pilgrimages around Pentecost and in the summer.

The most beautiful thing about this sanctuary is that it wasn't born from any apparition or miracle, but from pure love for the Virgin Mary. On June 14, 1863, the first stone of a column dedicated to the Immaculate Conception was laid, an initiative spearheaded by Father Martinho António Pereira da Silva, in the climate of fervor that followed the proclamation of the dogma in 1854. From that column, the current sanctuary-basilica gradually grew, completed around the mid-20th century. The sanctuary itself sums it up with a heartfelt phrase: "She didn't appear on Sameiro, She IS on Sameiro!"

«Ela não apareceu no Sameiro, Ela ESTÁ no Sameiro.»

Let us distinguish. The 1863 founding by Father Pereira da Silva, the progressive growth of the church and its esplanade, and its status as a major diocesan sanctuary are all documented. The idea that the Virgin "protects" Braga and northern Portugal from the mountain, and the accounts of graces and favors reflected in votive offerings, belong to tradition and popular sentiment. The existence of these offerings is verifiable, but the details of each miracle are not recorded in critical historical sources, as there are no published canonical processes.

The connection with the Rosary is liturgical and customary: the sanctuary has a fixed recitation of the Third Rosary, and on major pilgrimages families ascend praying it. However, there is no record of a founding event linked to the Rosary; the connection is that of ordinary Marian prayer.

Están documentados la fundación de 1863, el crecimiento del santuario y la práctica habitual del Rosario; son tradición devota la protección sobre Braga y los milagros narrados en exvotos. Un relato fundacional ligado al Rosario no consta.
