Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary
"The Princess, the Knights, and Liesse's Joy"

In the Laon region of northern France stands the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Liesse, Our Lady of Joy. The very name of the village, Liesse-Notre-Dame, speaks volumes about the sanctuary's importance to the local identity, which for centuries was the destination of great pilgrimages, including those of French kings and nobles.
The founding legend tells that, in the 12th century, three knights from the Laon region were taken prisoner during the Crusades by an emir in Egypt. The emir's daughter, named Ismérie in some versions, became interested in their faith, and they told her about the Virgin Mary. The princess asked for an image of her; the knights, without means, prayed, and a statue of the Virgin miraculously appeared. Through her intercession, they were freed and taken back to France with the image. Such was the joy of the people upon seeing the statue arrive and hearing the story that the place came to be called Liesse, "joy," and there the sanctuary was built.
Let us be honest and clear. The tale of the knights, the emir, and the princess is clearly legendary, a fact acknowledged by both historical studies and the serious presentation of the sanctuary: no documents from the Crusades confirm the names or details. It appears in later devotional texts as an edifying story. What is documented is that a Marian cult with an image and pilgrimages existed in Liesse from the 12th and 13th centuries, and that the sanctuary was frequently visited during the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period. The original image suffered damage from fires, wars, and the Revolution; the current one is a Black Madonna.
The legend highlights a precious detail: the encounter and respect between Christians and a young Muslim woman centered around the figure of Mary. There is no specific historical link to the Rosary; the devotion is part of a broader Marian piety.
