On the outskirts of Warsaw, the Polish Franciscan San Maximiliano María Kolbe I was dreaming of lifting a whole "City of the Immaculate" —Immaculate, «el lugar de la Inmaculada»— desde donde difundir por el mundo el amor a la Virgen María a través de la Militia of the Immaculate y de la imprenta.

He needed a large land near the capital. The land belonged to a Polish noble, the príncipe Jan Drucki-Lubecki. What history documents with certainty is that the prince, moved by the Marian work of the friar, He did not sell the land to him: he gave it to him. that the city of the Virgin might be born there, 1927.

The pious tradition adds an enchantable detail: on the way through the field, Saint Maximilian placed in it a image of the Immaculate. When the prince wanted to speak of the price, when he saw the Virgin already enthroned in his land he would have responded that he could not charge for a place where the Mother of God had set up her house.

In a few years one of the world's largest conventswith hundreds of friars given to prayer, the Rosary and the Marian press. From there would also come the supreme testimony of Kolbe, which years later would give his life for another man in Auschwitz.

It is appropriate to distinguish with affection the truth from the beautiful: it is documented that the prince donated the land for the sake of the work of the Immaculate One; the gesture of the image placed in the field and the response of the prince belong to the Pious tradition which surrounds the foundation - not a historical act - but truly express the soul of Niepokalanów: a land given to Mary.

Sources: biographies of Saint Maximilian Kolbe and Franciscan chronicles on the foundation of Niepikalanów (1927); Polish historiography (Prince Jan Drucki-Lubecki). The donation of the land is historical; the scene of the image and the phrase of the prince are transmitted as a devotional tradition.
